I've always wanted to see a hot air balloon launch and yesterday morning I got my wish. As if watching the sunrise over a tulip field wasn't enough! What an absolutely spectacular sight.

We celebrated my birthday this year with a snowshoe hike to Koosah Falls. The 10' of snow made it an especially neat visit and we had the falls entirely to ourselves. Fantastic!

The towering feature in the center of the crater of Mount Hood is aptly named Crater Rock. The most common climbing path to the summit goes around Crater Rock and up the peaked snow formation behind it called the Hogs Back. The summit stands at 11,239' and is the second most climbed glaciated peak behind Mt. Fuji.

Our view of Mount Hood from Timberline Lodge on Valentine's Day lasted about twenty minutes. A incredible twenty minutes! The clouds parted and we were treated to a seriously spectacular sunset. Happy Valentine's Day indeed!

One of the most intense experiences of my life - repelling 300 feet into Actun Loch Tunich, "Mother of All Caves." Getting the camera out of its case to take this photo was ridiculously frightening, even though I knew I was safe. Hanging from a rope hundreds of feet above the jungle canopy is scary but amazingly gratifying and I'm happy to have a photo of the moment.

The Oregon State Capitol is the fourth-newest United States capitol building in the country and was built in 1938. I think it's a pretty neat example of Art Deco architectural style.

Fun Fact: The building runs entirely on self-produced solar power.

My friend Brian and I went to Trillium Lake last night to photograph this amazing landscape. Neither of us expected so much ice to be on the lake but even without perfect reflections all the way through the water, the view did not disappoint! The melting ice is probably a somewhat unique sight as most people come here to either snowshoe in winter or camp in the summer. Pretty neat.

Kendra and I stayed at Sunriver resort in central Oregon this weekend. Such a great place with amazing scenery everywhere you look. This fog-shrouded pond was right outside our villa and was a fantastic place to spend the early morning.

Think back to Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Remember the alien with a huge, gaping mouth lined with several rows of sharp teeth sitting at the center of a giant sand pit?

That's kinda what this looked like. But the alien has since gone extinct and surrounding landscape has changed a bit over time.

My favorite time to be at Latourell Falls is winter as you pretty much have the whole place to yourself. It's not as lush and green as the rest of the year but is still just as beautiful.

City Center

I finally found a parking structure downtown that provides a truly great view. I've been to the top of this one before but something made it different today. Instead of just going to the top of a garage, I went to the spot I wanted to photograph and scanned the area for a vantage point. Voila, the money spot. Not on top but in the stairwell. I never would've found it had I used my usual tactics.

This is a panoramic image composed of 58 individual pictures. Took a bit of work to get it right but I'm very happy with how it turned out.

I went out to photograph the skyline and was amazed and happy to see a climbing expedition making their way up (or down) Mount Hood! I couldn't see their lights with the naked eye but a fifteen second exposure did the trick. Neat!

I swear time slows down when I see something as beautiful as this. I felt like if I stayed here long enough I'd see the lake ice over all the way. But I didn't, because I would have frozen to death.
