The Anarrhichthys ocellatus (Wolf Eel) is rare this far South, especially at such a shallow depth. This one was the first one I have ever seen on this reef.

I just finished off this roll a week ago because I needed to use big this Fuji for some group shots of people. This roll had been in it since last November.

Every once in a while winter time sunsets on the North coast of California produce incredible red light. It usually makes for excellent landscapes and seascapes.

You can see the trailing edge of a winter rain storm passing overhead. Because of that and the clouds passing in front of the sun the light was constantly and quickly changing. This image was taken about 40 seconds after this one, but because the light and the waves had changed the previous shot came out much better.

The full afternoon sun reflecting off of the white water from the breaking waves usually is far too bright compared to the rest of the scene so either the white water gets blown out, or other parts of the scene are too dark. Sometimes I try to compensate for this by using a Graduated Neutral Density (ND Grad) filter with the dark portion down over the white water. The ND grad approach can work, but it also darkens the dark areas in the lower part of the frame. Here I tried using a linear polarizer and used to to reduce the intensity of the light coming off of the white water. It seemed to work OK on the sea foam, but some of the rougher areas of white water are still blown out because the light is coming off with either a different polarization, or it is so rough those areas are unpolarized and appear brighter. The real solution to this is to wait for better light during the golden hour.

I set up this exposure on a timer assuming moonlight plus 2X factor for reciprocity failure. Once I started the exposure the moon starting ducking behind clouds and reappearing so I had to extend the exposure time on the fly. So the total exposure time was a bit of a WAG based on what I observed while it was happening.

I believe the one long streak in the sky must have been a meteor since I saw no planes in the sky. I did not see it happen, but the camera caught it.

Why Northeast Pacific??? I'll bet you thought this was the West coast (and it is), however when looking up references for sea life, which I often do for my underwater photographs, this area of the ocean is always referred to the Northeast Pacific. Our normal way of thinking is that of being on the West coast of North America since we are land creature by nature, but for sea life in the Pacific Ocean, this is the Northeast edge.

Normally I don't take many sunset photos, since it is so clichéd, however I took this shot just to finish the roll of film and thought it came out especially nice considering it is 35mm.

This image looks best in the light box

It had been raining most of the day, but the storm was just breaking. The tide was -1.5 feet and much was showing that is rarley exposed. The spot where I was standing to take this picture is normally underwater about 95% of the time. This was the first time I had been this close to the rocks where the waves were breaking.

After a night of heavy rain there was a break in the rain at sunrise. At that moment a break in the clouds allowed a almost horizontal sun beam shoot across Saunders Reef through the morning sea mist.

The white water is the sea breaking over the high spot. There is a rock that projects just above the surface there on minus tides.

Because of the local upwelling and density of sea life Saunders Reef is a great spot to observe Gray Whales feeding as they stop here during their annual migrations from Mexico to the Arctic.

Saunders Reef State Marine Conservation Area officially became part of the North-Central California Marine Protected Areas on May 1, 2010.

Saunders Reef is a stunningly beautiful place to dive. You can see my underwater photographs from Saunders Reef here.

If this was a film shot I might think the effect was due to a light leak.
