Thanks to our friend Monica Flint [http://www.flickr.com/photos/monicaflick/], who is serving as a docent and naturalist at the Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve, for the excellent flower walk today. Spring is in full swing here, and everything seems to be emerging at the same time.

Monica told us that Dutchman's Breeches are a fascinating plant. The seeds are spread by ants. To encourage ants to do this, the seeds have a fat-containing portion called an elaiosome. The ants transport the seeds to their nests to provide the high-energy fat from the elaisosome to their colony, and then the seeds themselves are rejected and placed in their debris pile, which is a rich medium for growth of the seeds.

I wonder why there's only one bird at the birdfeeder today?

I met this guy, Billy Koitzsch, one night (or morning...it was all running together in my mind) in Unalakleet, a village on the Bering Sea coast. He was bicycling on the Iditarod Trail from Anchorage to Nome, a distance of about 1100 miles. On his ride to Nome, he was accompanied by Bob Ostrum, who eventually won first place in the Iditarod Invitational bicycle race. Then, once he reached Nome, his plan was to bicycle by himself to Fairbanks. I saw on the internet that he successfully arrived in Fairbanks two days ago. Billy runs a bicycle shop in Anchorage, where he rents fat tire bikes and offers guide services, in case anyone wants to do a winter bicycle trip. www.arcticcycles.com/

Chukchi dog

Mikhail Telpin, one of the Iditarod mushers, is from Chukotka in eastern Siberia. His dogs are called Chukchi dogs. These stout, thick-furred animals are the ancestral dogs from which modern sled dogs are derived.

At Hatcher Pass, my nephew Brian would ride his snowmachine as high as he could and then race at top speed down the mountain.

Note the green and yellow collars. Luan is a musher from Brazil, so his dogs are dressed accordingly.

Me, driving my sister-in-law Susan's 8-dog team at Hatcher Pass, Alaska. Susan is riding in the sledbag.

You can see from the spray of snow (bottom left) that I was standing on the brake. The dogs love to run so much that I had to slow them down.
