Standing in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle, the Ross Fountain in Princes Street Gardens was installed in 1872 after being purchased by one Daniel Ross, a local gun maker, who saw it at the Great Exhibition in London in 1862.

Sorry i haven't been around much folks, work has taken up most of my time so i haven't had a chance to get any shots or visit flickr. I will be back soon though, i'm planning another trip to SE Asia in a couple of months. Hope you're all doing good!

Hanoi Opera House

Built by the french between 1901 and 1911, the Hanoi Opera House is located in downtown Hanoi. With it's colonial french design with pillars and balconies overlooking the city centre, this 900-seat building is deserving to be one of the capital's grandest buildings.

Angkor Thom

A couple of elephants make their way across the moat away from Angkor Thom's south gate entrance. This avenue which crosses over the moat is lined with several statues, gods on the left and demons (or 'asuras') on the right. Founded in the late 12th century by king Jayavarman VII, Angkor Thom is one of the largest of all the Khmer cities and was the capital up until around the 17th century. The name Angkor Thom means "Great City", and this view of the south gate is what most visitors will see first when they arrive here :-)

Pha That Luang

Regarded as the most important national monument in Laos, Pha That Luang temple was originally built on the ruins of a 13th century Khmer Temple, and has undergone many restorations and reconstructions up until the 1930's due to various foreign invasions in the area. Pha That Luang means 'Great Stupa', and can be found on the east side of Lao's capital Vientiane.

Cattle Egret

The cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) is originally native to south west europe, tropical africa and asia, but has undergone one of the most rapid expansions of any bird species, and can now be found almost all over the world. It feeds on a wide range of prey including flies, grasshoppers, spiders and frogs. It is popular with catlle ranchers due its role as a control of ticks and flies. This head shot taken at the KL Bird Park in Kuala Lumpur.

National Monument

The National Monument on Calton Hill in Edinburgh is Scotland's memorial to those who died in the Napoleonic Wars. The designers of the monument, Charles Cockerell and William Playfair, were said to have been inspired by the Parthenon in Athens, Greece, but after work started in 1822 only the twelve columns seen today were ever completed.

Ta Prohm

A different part of Ta Prohm from the usual scene as shown in my previous photo from here.

Ta Prohm is a buddhist temple founded by the Khmer king Jayavarman VII during the late 12th century, and is a temple which looks much the same as on it's discovery in the 19th century, although restoration work was underway when i visited. Surrounded by jungle and situated close to Angkor Thom, this temple is popular with visitors due to sights like the famous silk-cotton trees which engulf the ruins, and it also appeared in the movie "Tomb Raider" :-)

Great Hornbill

The Great Hornbill (Buceros bicornis) is one of the largest members of the hornbill family and is native to India, Sumatra and around the Malay Peninsula. These birds mainly eat fruit but will sometimes eat reptiles and other birds. The most distinctive part of the Great Hornbill is its casque on top of its bill. The casque is hollow and believed to serve no purpose at all.

I took this shot through a fence at the KL Bird Park in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia :-)

Toco Toucan

The largest and best known species of the toucan family, the toco toucan (Ramphastos toco) has it's natural habitat in central and eastern parts of South America, but is also very popular in zoos throughout the world, including at the KL Bird Park in Kuala Lumpur, where i took this shot. It's large and unusual bill is handy for picking hard to reach fruits from trees, and also for scaring off predators :-)
