"Roll on over you clouds of doom
The silver lining is coming through
Just say yes, just say yes, just say yes
Quit giving up so soon
Our love will win what war will lose

Every little bit of light
Every little bit of light
Helps get us through the night

Time fled from the west
Under a crescent moon
Feel the rattled sunset
The stars came unglued and the sky fell in
And the smoke withdrew from these ashes

Every little bit of light
Every little bit of light
Helps get us through the night these days

Project 366-1 2009 September 15 258/365

Another clear and clean night sky. Another beautiful view of the Milky Way.

Technical note: I used ISO 1600 and took 4 minutes of light frames and 12 minutes of dark frames. The low amount of digital noise with a 3:1 dark:light ratio is pretty worth the effort.

I saw one meteor before midnight and caught at least two on camera. This was the best one. The peak should provide about 200 per hour tonight and tomorrow, but the last quarter moon will overwhelm all but the brightest ones.

This is the cleanest photo I've taken of the Orion nebulae complex from the Flame and Horsehead nebulae to the Running Man and Great Orion Nebula (M42). This is a total of one hour's worth of exposure data (12 x 5 minutes) under a rural sky. I did use a light pollution filter to cut out the sky glow from the surrounding villages. I may tweak the colour saturation later. But I just wanted to show you how fairly clean it looks.

It's May, and the International Space Station and our part of the Earth is perfectly situated for multiple fly overs every night for the next couple of weeks. Basically, every 90 minutes we can catch a glimpse of the ISS between the beginning and end of astronomical twilght. This was the first one tonight. There should be 3 more fly overs before sunrise tomorrow. Not that I'm staying up to catch them all. :)

And so, spring arrives in a few hours. Orion setting in the early morning after midnight. Note the star trails along the belt stars are very straight and as you go up the trails start to curve up while as you go below they curve downward. The belt stars lie along the celestial equator meaning that is the plane that the earth's equator is parallel to if it was projected out into space.

Here's a crop of a photo of Comet Lulin shot with the Nikkor 200mm f/4 AI telephoto lens. I had the IDAS light pollution filter on the lens to help bring down the sky fog. There's still a bit of vignetting even though it's cropped. You can clearly see the dust tail (anti-tail) to the left of the comet. The proper tail is not that distinguished as it is projecting away from us. The bloated stars and Saturn were caused by me not using a smaller aperture.

Filling:
1 cup dates, pitted and chopped
¼ cup water
1 tsp orange rind
¼ cup orange juice

Crumb Mixture:
2 cups large rolled oat flakes
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup All-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
¼ tsp baking soda
¼ tsp salt
¾ cup butter or margarine

Combine dates, water, orange rind and juice in a saucepan. Simmer, stirring occasionally, until dates are soft. Set aside to cool completely.

Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).

Combine oat flakes, brown sugar, flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Pat two-thirds of the crumb mixture into a 9" x 9" (2 L) cake pan. Spread date filling over this, then gently press remaining crumb mixture evenly over top.

Bake for 30-35 minutes or until lightly browned.

I caught the tail end of my first Iridium flare of 2009. This was a -3 magnitude flare, which I didn't fully get because I switched the camera again in mid-exposure to this angle.
