Bodmin & Wenford Cornwall September 2006

loose_grip_99 posted a video:

A brief glimpse from the footplate of Great Western 2-8-0T freight engine 4247 climbing up the hill from Bodmin Road to Bodmin.

After the out and back journey to Boscarne Junction from Bodmin General station I was offered a footplate ride to Bodmin Parkway & back on this loco. The run to Parkway is virtually all downhill but the return was impressive as the gradients are between 1 in 37 & 1 in 40 straight off the end of the platform. The freight engine handled the 4 coach train with no problems but was working hard all the way. Brilliant. A much more dramatic journey than one on the cushions. Thanks Will the driver, Bill, the fireman & Brian, the trainee fireman.

In 2006 to commemorate 40 years since the closure of the the Great Central line as a through route the modern-day GCR brought Southern Merchant Navy 4-6-2 35005 Canadian Pacific to the railway and temporarily renumbered her 35030 Elder-Dempster Lines. This engine, long-gone to the scrapyard, pulled a special train on that last day in 1966.

Here "35030" is seen on Loughborough shed being prepared for a day's work. The hopper ashpan has just been dropped hence the pile of clinker and ash beneath the loco.

The clean lines , some say spartan, of the backhead and cab of Great Western 2884 Class 2-8-0 3850 as it stood at the head of its train in Minehead station.

3850 is owned by the Dinmore Manor Locomotive Ltd and based on the West Somerset. The following information is from their website www.dinmoremanor.co.uk/index.html .

3850 was one of the last batch of the 2884 class of GWR 2-8-0 heavy freight locomotives, introduced in 1938, which were an later version of the 2800 class originally introduced in 1902 to the design of George Churchward. Built at Swindon on 16 June 1942 it was first allocated to St. Philip's Marsh, Bristol. From there it went to Westbury in March 1947 and onto Severn Tunnel Junction twelve months later. In 1958 3850 was put into store, but returned to service with a move to Aberdare in February 1959 from where it worked until 1963. The locomotive then went to Banbury before being transferred to Oswestry in October 1964 and then to Croes Newydd in January 1965 from where it was withdrawn by British Railways later in the year.

It had the good fortune to be dispatched to Woodham's in Barry and was purchased for preservation in 1984. After many years of dedication it steamed again in February 2006.

If the backhead is considered spartan then the rear view from Great Western 2884 Class 2-8-0 3850 is even more uncluttered. This is great for sighting signals, etc on a warm summer's day such as this but mid-winter tender-first running sorts the men from the boys!

Thanks to the driver and fireman I was allowed a quick visit on the footplate before our own train left Minehead. After a short chat and a few photos I cleared off to let the fireman get on with preparing his fire.

This is a pretty impressive looking supermarket. Look closer and its railway origins become clearer. In fact it was Newcastle station on the County Down Railway which ran from Belfast south to this terminus.

The station was opened on 25 March 1869, although this building actually dates from 1905 when it was remodelled to accommodate the Great Northern Railway's line from Banbridge. and closed to passengers in 1955, by which time it had been taken over by the Ulster Transport Authority.

An unidentified green-liveried BRCW Class 104 diesel multiple unit in the Up bay at Selby's 1840 Leeds & Selby Railway (later North Eastern Railway) station. I posted a shot of the other end of this 4 car unit which was in Rail Blue a while back. The classic railway oil lamp standing on the platform was still in use despite the dmu having full electric lighting. It took many years for the old railway practices to change.

At this time Selby was still a major rail complex on the East Coast Main Line, the diversion of the 1980s a long way off, and behind the goods yard is still busy

We had arrived from Knottingley by dmu, maybe this one but I'm not sure as it's on the Up side, after failing to get a lift hitchhiking on the A1 at Ferrybridge. We waited here for a connecting train to York and the northeast en route to Sunderland.

Adding its bit to the smokey atmosphere generated by the locos in the marshalling yard, South African Railways Class 25NC 4-8-4 3492 Sindie (North British, Glasgow 1953) departs northwards from De Aar station with the Orange Express.

Due to the desert conditions on the Great Karoo the Class 25s when built, between 1953 & 55, were fitted with condensing tenders to conserve water. Since the Capetown line was electrified south through Touws River the problem was no longer as serious and most of the condensing engines and tenders were rebuilt by SAR becoming Class 25NC - non-condensing. The tenders, original or cut down, were very long and carried on 6 wheel bogies.

Following the Swithland Steam Gala ex-London & North Western Railway Webb Coal Tank 0-6-2T 1054 was on shed on Monday & the cab still looked pretty immaculate. The loco's support crew had disposed the fire so that was one less job for us.

You can't tell from this shot but it doesn't take long for the burnished metal beading of the cab "window" surrounds and hand rails to start to lose their shine when an engine is standing and they were aready turning rust-coloured.

No.1054 was built at Crewe and entered service in 1888, becoming No.7799 on the LMS Railway after the grouping in 1923, and then carried No.58926 under British Railways after the railways were nationalised in 1948.

The only other LNWR engine I've been on was the Super D but they both share a low central footplate section so the fireman is down where he belongs with the driver high above him in his ordained position. ;-)

Amongst the diesels Beyer-Peacock 2-10-0 56112 while Henschel 2-8-2 46059 & 2-10-0 Skoda 56153 were around the back of the shed. There were no engines in steam except our loco, 2-10-0 56052 near the shed entrance.
Steam working on the North Eastern Region of British Railways had only finished 8 months earlier (particularly galling since my interest in all things railway only started in February 1968!) so not surprisingly there was still a lot of steam-age infrastructure and artifacts scattered around. This fine North Eastern Railway water column stood at the southern end of Selby station as Deltics ran by on the then East Coast Main Line. I'm not sure when it was demolished.

The colour light signal on the Up Main is deceiving because many stretches of the ECML were still semaphore signalled in 1968 as evidenced by the LNER ground dolly and the post just visible on the left which is a large semaphore gantry.
