Young Forest Third Floor

Tar carries nutrients. So does the wood subfloor. That must explain the growth of this new forest. The trees find a way, planting near enough to sunlight. Rain flies sideways and collects. I also drips down through the rotting roof and collects around the roots. Over the decades, the forest has found a way to begin its return.

Who crosses out mushrooms? I guess sober people? This image has a certain down the rabbit hole feel for me. After passing the broken door, I peered through the series of doors. The glass interiors were long since broken out. A certain repetition. Empty office, empty office, empty office. A drone, a mantra. Capital remains.

Clownicide III

In honor of Paris Photo LA, where I will be headed today, I am posting the last of my abandoned Six Flags New Orleans photos. The French love clowns, right? So this is my little tribute, in gratitude. I posted the digital version of this shot a while back. That was the shot that got me a bit of notice. Even though the two shots were taken at the same time, when I compare them, I discover a dramatic shift in my perspective over the years.

It was this very clown that compelled me to travel to NOLA for the first time and experience the eerie quiet myself. By the time I had arrived, someone must have discovered and expressed their fear of clowns.

Defenestration

Some treasure hunter took his head. I'm grateful, actually. It adds to the feel of slow decay as this guardian sits upon his throne in front of the funhouse ride at abandoned Six Flags New Orleans. He was likely originally designed to look a bit decayed, losing his flesh and all. Then real decay set in. Katrina loosened him up, then the elements and hunters started to take little bits.

Realizing safari

Tucked away in a back corner of the amusement park, these Tasmanian Devil jeeps were almost hidden in the overgrowth. Originally meant to conjure a looney safari, the ride now has a much more real safari growing around it.

Solving the Problems That Face Us

Being homeless can be an occupation of opportunity. The days could get long and boring, holed up here at the abandoned Dixie Beer plant. Luckily, the former occupants left a near-mint copy of the Brewer's Digest. Add a little incense to improve the dank smell of molding hops and it's almost livable.

This shot continues the theme of the derelict signs, directing our amusements. Despite a period of being submerged, this sign for Good Times Garden at abandoned Six Flags New Orleans remains. Resting against this tree, it reminded me that there was still time for a special event: a little sneaking, a little creeping, a little photography.

Mission Statement

This is a film detail shot of the room full of computers at abandoned Six Flags Hurricane Harbor in New Orleans. When I look at it, I imagine how the mission statement posted on the wall must have taken on a strange meaning with the high water mark sitting just below it. Floating above Lake Six Flags. Some people boated through the ruins. I imagine them reading "To deliver Family Fun and Fond Memories for all of Our Guests" just hovering on the water. A surreal hope, but their mission was successful with me. I will never forget the intensity I felt wandering the ruins.

We walked into the band room of this abandoned middle school and found it barren except for this little assemblage. Someone had stacked the trophies in what appeared to be a sort of wabi sabi urbex aesthetic. I'm not sure if that was the intention, but that was the meaning I decided to take from it. These trophies may have lost some of their meaning since the flood. They now had almost no one (except a few explorers) to reflect on them and understand, this middle school band must have kicked some ass.

This loveseat was positioned to perfectly view the sunrise coming over the Salton Sea. The sunrises over the sea can be incredibly stunning. It's an eerie feeling to be hit by intense pinks and blues bouncing off the mountains and into the water as trailers very slowly decay next to you. It kind of makes it more perfect for me. In nature's reclamation, we must have decay. It defines beauty and rebirth. All those moments happen simultaneously here.

Tilapia dawn 2

The decaying tilapia painted on the side of this ruined trailer is an excellent example of commentary in art. The artist is likely referencing the millions of tilapia that bloom and then die in an unending cycle on the shores just feet away. The die offs are so massive that the shores are not covered in sand, rather bones, many feet deep. The crunch below the feet is not the salt, but the little bones, crunching, turning into a new form of sand. The decay of the fish, decay of the trailer, and decay of the Salton Sea - all joined in this one piece.

These massive abandoned sites make for good target practice. I guess they were working on some suburban combat scenarios. It looks like this house must have been hit with two shells. Inside the house, we found spent shells and an empty fridge. That kind of summed it all up for me.

As long as we have atmosphere, the sun sets. Our constructions seem to have less permanence. The Salton Sea floods and recedes in an unpredictable, but constant cycle. The soil liquifies and swallows its guest. No longer a home for off-the-grid vacationers, now a haven for ruin pornographers.

Black Clock Issue 16

I'm very grateful to have made the cover of the very cool literary magazine, Black Clock. They also included a bunch of my images inside! It was very interesting to see how well my images fit with these stories. It's like we were "writing" in parallel.

There will be a reading at The Last Bookstore this Sunday 2/17 at 4 pm, so come on out and listen to some cool readings. I'll be there so come and say "Hi."
