&lt;p&gt;This month, our era at the Matchbox drowns in a wineglass, like an autumnal Ontario Culicinae. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
As I view for one of the last times the brick wall of the adjacent townhouse, its roofline cascades into the kind of silence ... which only the view from a long-familiar window can induce.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If this was a secular funeral, we might celebrate the beauty of organically-patterned countertops, and the success of at least one season of tomatoes. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We might even rejoice in the icicles of O-seven, or barbecued kilograms of richly marinaded steak.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We'd sing the praises of a six- or seven-legged  something, with refractive edges,  beady eyes, and spindly persistence. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
But in my eyes these sacred severed limbs involve us rather in a kind of upward falling from seed on battered branch to fertile Southcote soil,&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
where undoubtedly some new form of life will spring up, equally encapsulated by community, coffee, and the fog of war.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Carry on Matchbox, carry on.&lt;/p&gt;</description>

As an oak leaf, I may cling to the branch that is my mother for a long, long season. Perhaps even hanging on well into the new spring. But if I acquiesce in smallness, I may enjoy the vibrance of being green, but also look forward to being autumnally bright. I may see the peace in this: to be subsumed into the forest floor is an ultimate giving of self towards the flourishing of future foliage, and corresponds to an awareness of the many deaths on which my own life depends.
