Reala: Spring Flowers April 2009 013-2

Haven't taken the F100 out much so I decided to take it for a spin. Awesome camera to use, the precise automation allows you to focus totally on composition. Yet there is something about this camera that takes away from the fulfillment I get with film. I always think “why not just shoot digital?” The only reason I can think of is that it allows me to use all my Nikon G-type lenses on a film camera.

There is something that needs to be said about Nikon glass on film. It is ultimately sharp. However, the colour rendering is not that great. Zeiss optics are unparralled in that regard. Nikon's market is geared almost wholly towards digital users nowadays. And as you all know, with digital colour can always be manipulated in post processing

Stitched this with a number of shots taken with my 105mm 1.8 AI-S ... love this lens I am liking it more than the AFS version. I Couldn't get as much of the tree as I wanted in this stitch onto this, on the left side, but i wanted to preserve as much of it as possible, hence the shape of this shot.

Took this one 10000 feet up at Haleakala Crater. Air was kinda thin and I couldn't hike at all. Also couldn't get myself to drive up here for the sunrise. Being on vacation means not waking up early ... or not sleeping at all. Maybe next time!

Attended a Luau in Maui and caught this scene. Show was great... food was MEH! Company was GREAT!

Taken with my 70-200mm f/2.8 ED VR ... should have left this one at home, but since I brought it I must use it!

Taken with my 70-200mm f/2.8 ED VR ... should have left this one at home, but since I brought it I must use it!

Wow it has been a long time since I posted something. Just returned from a trip to Maui. I decided to post only ten shots from the trip. I must say I carried too much gear once again.

This one was taken with my Nikkor 14-24mm and stitched in photoshop. I still haven't mastered the colour profile thing. The colour calibration is off for this shot. Next thing on my list of to dos!

Taken at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. This is a nearly 400 year old White Oak Tree!
Lately my favorite lens combination is a 50mm + 105mm. These two lenses really suit all my needs and they are light!

Now that I don't have a car the key is to travel light! Taken with my 50mm AF f/1.8 with my D700. I really like the effects of the f/1.8.. I should have brought out the ZF for this one ... some velvia would be awesome too. So to play with some T* coating with medium format ... I think i'll spend some time with the Hasselblad next week if the weather permits. I am really enjoying the large aperture lenses I have lately... kinda itching to buy a 85mm f/1.4 ZF.

I have moved to Toronto for for nearly five months now. Finally getting used to everything. The greatest part of TO is the new people I have met. The crappiest thing is of course being away from home, friends and family.

The colours don't seem to be that great in the GTA yet. Probably because it is warmer in the city.

One of the most favorite things about shots of children are their expressions. This child caught my attention while I was strolling around I probably took no more than a dozen shots this day but I was glad I had my camera when this opportunity arose.

Fall colors are arriving in TO. Hope I can get some great shots in the next few weeks!

Drove around the countryside today chasing the sunset. It was hard trying to find a place with a high enough vantage point to get the countryside and the mountains. The sunset was kinda MEH ... but because of all the gas I wasted I think I owe it to the enviornment and my pocket to post something!

Anyways ... wish I had a teleconverter or a 300mm lens for this shot. I would have been able to get rid of the ulgy sky at the top!

I manually blended three pictures together using photoshop and layers. Let me just say ... it took FOREVER! Bought a roll of Ektar 100 again today ... giving this film a 2nd chance!

Ladies and Gentlemen Alberta in April .... still too much snow!

Update September 21, 2009:
Having moved to Toronto for four months nows I am really starting to miss the west. Not being much of a fan of country music, I am finally able to see why country music singers always vibe about missing home ... the prairies and the ranch and the simple things in life. I really do miss home.

Fungman posted a photo:

Broke some boundaries with this shot I stacked a Pentax 67 105mm Takumar 105mm f/2.4 on top of my Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 VR lens. Stacking my Nikon 50mm f/1.8 gave me some vigetting which wasn't too pleasing. Anyways the Nikkor was set at f/8 while the pentax lens was left wide open. The very shallow depth of view is very fun to play with! I am still experimenting with this technique hope to get better results later. Can't wait for some spring flowers!

Anyways I finally picked up a Pentax 67II! Pretty sweet camera! I have a test roll being developed right now! Hope to get those shots up soon! After reading Travel 67's blog I have come to realize that each time the shutter is pressed down on this "beast" I am down a dollar! The Hasselblad costs about 80 cents. 36 exposure 135 format costs around 30 cents per click. Hope I find a job in Hong Kong or something that way my film cost will be cut in half =P.

Anyways ... it seems the new Voiglander Bessa III/ Fujifilm GF670 price is out. They are around $3000 Canadian each. My jaw dropped when I discovered the price! I can't see this camera selling too fast as a Mamiya 7II with 80mm lens only costs around $2200 Canadian. Hope the grey market has all our answers!

Last and in my opinion best of my Big Hill Springs series. Hopefully the weather warms up for a venture to Troll Falls sometime soon!

Despite all my attempts at photoshop I can't seem to get the subtle contrast of Fuji Velvia or Provia. Maybe it's because digital cameras are too sharp? Anyone have any pointers?

This shot was actually taken to compare Zeiss optics with Nikkor. I took a few shots with the Hasselblad of this scene as well, I get the film back tomorrow. I don't really want to see any dramatic differences seeing how I have invested heavily into Nikkor optics.

One of the main waterfalls at Big Hill Springs. Took my 70-200mm out for spin. Haven't used it for a while but it is still awsome on a FX camera!

My rant aside ... shooting anything with snow in it is very challenging to say the least. White subjects tend to trip up the camera meter. Over exposing by a stop will blow out the detail. For this capture, decreasing the exposure will not give the ribbon waterfall effects. So snow detail had to be sacrificed!

I took a couple of shots of a different waterfall with the Hasselblad as well. Going to get it developed tomorrow. Time to get douched out by Vistek employees!

Telephoto lenses are also great for landscapes!

A shot I took last year.

I finally cleared all the film out of my cameras ... except for the Hasselblad (with 160s and Acros), but I don't want to take this camera out in the frigid cold! My wallet will hurt if it needs another service. I think this camera reacts to the cold as good as the 5D Mk II does haha!

Check it out:
Gotta learn how to soup my own film and after that F100 + 105mm (and only 105mm) shots comming up.
