Ohara Hadaka Matsuri

The Ohara Hadaka Matsuri ("Naked Man Festival") is one of Chiba's most famous yearly events. At the beginning of every autumn, each district in the Ohara area forms teams, brings out the mikoshi(heavy portable shrines) of their local shrines, and hauls them down to the local beachside. Hoisting the mikoshi onto the shoulders of teams of 25-30 people, they charge into the surf and toss the gigantic mikoshi up and down, almost as if they did not weigh on the order of a tonne, occasionally battling with other teams.

After their salty bath, the teams parade them through the center of town, ending at a local elementary school, where they change gears and run at top speed, carrying the huge portable shrines, in a scene similar to the running of the bulls in Spain in energetic chaos. If you like matsuri, this is certainly one of Chiba's top five.

Date: Tuesday, Sept. 23rd (nat'l holiday) - Wednesday, Sept. 24th
