Don't Turn Back the Clock

ikons98 posted a photo:

Images shot at a NH State House Rally on Women's Issues March 7, 2012

At this time the NH House of Representatives was considering and eventually passed legislation that allowed insurance providers to opt out of contraception coverage on religious grounds. The justification was "to lower insurance costs". This was also around the time that the Susan B. Komen Foundation temporarily withdrew their support for Planned Parenthood. With regards to the national issues, the reaction was immediate and strong across the nation. With regards to the local issues, the women in these images were clearly determined to let their voices be heard.

While the images in this group are from many months ago, they were shot with a small camera, very quickly and very casually. Nevertheless, I am not sure why they did not get posted at the time. (Life interferes with my Flickr time, I guess.) However, now seems like an particularly good time to do so. I thank the women (and men) for allowing me to record their political activism. Some messages may may strike the viewer as rather strong. The signs express the outrage many women and men feel over the persistence of the idea that government has the right to regulate the private lives (and bodies) of its female citizens.

Towards the end of our Oregon coastal trip, we stayed a day at Bandon Beach, Oregon. It did seem like a great place to explore for several days. And it's not far from Crater Lake. Unfortuately, time did not permit our exploring inland.

The cloud formations here overtook the serpentine drama of the shoreline rocks.

Beach Reverie at Sunset

This was taken along the Oregon Coast. I was working with a slow shutter, hence the softness and movement. I loved the colors that emerged from the file. Had to share it. You are invited, and welcome, to comment honestly.

We were very lucky to have had some delightful spring weather, several days in a row, with just enough cold rain and wind to imagine what it must be like for locals who must deal with an abundance of this kind of weather. As for our rainy day forays with our cameras, I have to wonder whether working in the rain, as we did, was an act of bravery or sheer madness. We did come to the conclusion that when one is in a place for a limited amount of time, there are only two choices: shoot in the rain, or go to the local aquarium. We did both! And thankfully, the equipment is still working.

Oregon Coast Aquarium.

Despite being in captivity, it was still marvelous to watch them interact. These are somewhat large birds, and at least one of them had a very large personality! I was almost positive that he was deliberately trying to spray us with water and certainly "put on a show"!

These birds roost on the islands and haystacks off the coast of the the NW, particularly BC and Alaska with some even as far down as the Channel Islands off the coast of California. They are almost free of terrestrial predators. Predatory birds, however, are another story. Their diet consists of fish and squid.

The Oregon coast sea stacks provide the kind of shelter these birds need. However, they tend to keep to the ocean side of the stacks. In low tide, one is able to walk up to the stacks to explore the marvelous tide pools surrounding the stacks full of large and colorful anemone and star fish (actually, they are now called "sea stars" as they are not really "fish".). The wildlife managers protect most of the puffin (and other bird) habitat, however, by controlling how far onto the rocks one may go. There were a couple of puffin sitings, but it was difficult to actually observe interactions in the wild. Watching this guy at the aquarium made me suspect that to be able to do so would be fascinating.
