The Mammals, displayed using a further development of my Voronoi treemap code (now with nicer borders and more robust calculations). Each polygon represents a mammalian species or group of species, distributed inside larger groupings.

Eubacteria

The phylogeny of the eubacteria as displayed by my Voronoi treemap. The treemap works best when trees are fairly flat and with many species in a group, so this area of the Tree of Life works very nicely.

Mammals 2

The Mammals, displayed using a further development of my Voronoi treemap code. Each polygon represents a mammalian species or group of species, distributed inside larger groupings. The color is mostly ornamental, but extinct species and groups are turned dull and gray.

Humans are (like in my previous version) in the light blue area to the upper right. Our species is the turquoise pentagon neighboring six extinct hominid species. We better make sure we don't lose our color either.

Primates

A voronoi treemap of the primates, based on the Tree of Life dataset. Each polygon represents a species, with border thickness and color attempting to show cladistic groupings. The right side is Strepsirrhini (lemurs, galagos, lorises), the right one has tarsiers in mint at the top, new world monkeys in purple, the old world monkeys in dark blue, hominids in light blue and gibbons in green.

H sapiens is the heart-shaped sky-blue polygon, surrounded by our extinct relatives and with chimps in the left corner, orangutans at the top and gorillas at the bottom corner.

The visualisation clearly has some way to go before being ready for prime time, but it is already appealing.

The image was calculated in Matlab. I used a variant of Balzer & Deussen's algorithm without the messy sample points and polygon extraction parts; I have to pay in terms of polygon quality instead, but I think I can fix that.

The central yellow group is antelopes; warmly colored parts are ungulates. The blue/purple group at the top are various rodents, the irregular mint group to the left the carnivorae (the ToL does not have deeper subdivisions there), the white rectangle is the extinct triconodonts and the blue blob to the upper left is the primates.

The different species of the Cephalopoda, displayed with my Voronoi treemap. It tends to exaggerate the area of isolated small branches, which is not entirely wrong. The red polygon on the top is Spirula spirula, the only member of the family Spirulidae.
