A rare sight, Whitby' station platform all but empty at a time when the train is in. Two minutes earlier the platform was bustling with people, they must have all got on the train :-)

I sat in the car, out of the icy cold winds, waiting for about quarter of an hour hoping the clouds would clear enough to let the sun light up the scene before the sun disappeared behind the hills.. I got just a glimpse of light.. :-)

That's the direction I walked in, until I got fed up with the flies when I got lower down... I did intend doing some steam train photo's in Newtondale... another flyless day maybe ;-)

You can see the expanse of heather in the distance, what you can't see is the massive expanse of heather to the left of picture.. That blue roof belongs to the old Saltergate Inn.. it's not actually a blue roof but just blue plastic sheeting covering the roof. The old pub has been closed for a long time.. a quick check on the internet and I can see why...

I headed to the moors near Newton Dale halt... but gave up what I had planned because of these flies, or whatever they are with their dangly bits, mating all over the place.. It wasn't pleasant so I headed back higher up the moor where the stronger breezes seemed to get rid of them..

Go to original and try counting them.. lol.

Not the best of photo's, they're both big crops of one photo that I took before I scarpered uphill ;-)

I had no intention of doing a letter box style shot when I took this.. in fact I've had to crop the foreground heather because it was out of focus and too distracting. I blame a lack of concentration, while I was taking my shots I was in conversation with an elderly guy I had met there.. Also my intended shots of Simon Howe didn't work out either, there always seemed to be someone either reading maps or eating a picnic on the howe while I was there.. I couldn't out stay them as I had to meet Mick.. another day maybe ;-)

It nice to see the road to Stape is being repaired.. it's long been full of potholes, presumably caused by heavy use of logging wagons... It's a nice looking ford also :-)

The slight hill or bump on the horizon is probably a howe / barrow, an old burial place.. there's quite a lot of them on the moors..

Heather to the left heather to the right, sky straight on.. couldn't get any light on the heather because the sky behind me was clouding over fast... because the heather was in the shade it looks a different colour from my last shot...

strange not having a real subject matter... look carefully and you will see the lone tree from my last shot :-)

A lone tree stands in a carpet of heather.. Whitby and the sea can just about be seen in the distance under the windswept branches of the tree :-)

The heather's colour seemed to change with the light..

I'd set off for a walk on the moors today, only to get a phone call from Mick who was still back in York... so we arranged to meet and tried to get some heather shots.. both of us know this tree well.

No problems with the road here, but plenty at the side of the road.. this is Young Ralph's Cross as apposed to old Ralph's Cross further back from the road and out of sight :-)

I guess the title could have been the Long and Winding Road.. but I think I've used that one before.. Going down that road looks as if it could be a Magical Mystery Tour... the road is steep as it drops down into Rosedale, normally there's great views as you drive down, but on this day it was a different cloudy great view.
It's a very simple shot, I've nothing new of late, I don't seem to have used the camera much. Today was cold and windy with snow storms but there was also sunshine.. I should have been out there, but somehow I didn't feel like it.. must be the winter blues.. lol. I'll recover :-)

Guess what, another wet and misty day.. I wanted something to post so I ventured out to the moors this afternoon.. Photo's were hard to come by, visibility was so poor but the top of Rosedale Bank didn't let me down, I could look down at the low clouds and watch them roll along the dale.. a very pretty sight. The foreground came out reasonable, the ground is sodden, but the grasses all the greener for it.. Taken with the G10, the rain doesn't tend to get on the lens as easy as it does on the SLR's.

Completing the photo's taken yesterday.. this is more about a feeling than a photo of a steam engine.. the feeling I got as this great engine loomed round the bend slowly filling my view finder..
