It proved tough to get a shot, without motion blur, of this very active male American Goldfinch. He is in the shade, just after the sun went below the treeline, while the BG is still in full sunlight.

Here is another photo from a shoot I did last June. Although I hate to see the raptor season come to an end, I'm looking forward to seeing some of our spring/summer visitors return.

Now, all I need is for Nikon to finish the maintenance on my gear and I can get back out in the sunshine.

If you want to test your equipment in low light, shoot Brown Creepers. They seem to always find the darkest part of the tree and never stay still for more than a moment.. The good news is that the dark is where the moss likes to live.

I decided to post a more recent shot of the Golden Eagle that has been hanging out in Sumas Prairie. I prefer the light and pose on this shot to my first posting.

Note: I cloned out a few branches that unduly detract from the subject.

I came across a few old photographer friends that located this pair of Long-eared Owls.

The couple finally opened their eyes and gave us a look. The harsh light and messy BG are far from ideal, but it's the first time I've seen a pair together on a perch.

Golden Day

I found two Golden Eagles out in Sumas Prairie, Abbotsford, BC, today. This sub-adult has been reported in the area previously. The second bird is a a long, long distance, but the golden wash definitely says Goldie. I don't recall this bird being reported this season.

Note: Cloned a couple branches out of the top right corner of the frame.

This is the first time I've seen a Long-eared Owl out in the open. I wished it was on a natural perch, but it was great just to see it.

This song sparrow decided to take a bath close to where I was photographing Lincoln's sparrows. Those fast little wings were just a blur at 1/250s.
