Cheshunt Grammar School 1st XI vs Cheshunt Cricket Club, 1969, at Cheshunt Cricket Club.
(It must be 1969 as I only played in the 1st XI in my final year.)

In this picture (L to R) Bob Pettingale, Steve Dowling, John Forester, Keith Marshall (that's me, in white cap), someone hidden, Alan Pilgrim (captain in dark cap), someone else hidden, Roger Clark (Games Master at rear), Andrew Pearson (wicket-keeper), Colin Mudge (almost hidden), Dave Perkins.

Amazing what you find when you start digging in family files! I think this must be a copy photo from the local paper.

And thanks to Dennis Holland, Dave Horne, Steve Dowling and Colin Mudge for filling in a some of the names for me.

Floss, one of our first pair of cats, caught mid-yawn. Just look at those wonderful fangs and whiskers. This would have been in the mid-80s as we acquired them in 1981 and they wore collars only for a couple or three years. He was a large cat and obviously half Siamese, judging by his long tail, long legs and voice. He made almost 18 before succumbing to the big C. A character to the end. Scanned from a not brilliant print.

Week 45 entry for 52 weeks challenge.

No time for any decent photography this week, so we've dug deep into the archives again.

This is from about 1964/5. I'm the urchin in the poncy white gloves leading the SE Hertfordshire District Scouts St George's Day Parade. Although I have Patrol Leader's stripes I can't be more than 14 as I'm not wearing glasses.

Those were the days when shorts were mandatory, even for Scout Masters, although thank heaven we didn't have to try to maintain those old style hats.

Photograph, probably by my father, taken at Turnford, Cheshunt, outside the then Rochford's Sports Ground. The road is what was then the main A10 to Cambridge (it's been bypassed now and is the A1170).

Group photo taken at Sidney Sussex College sports ground, Cambridge. I can't remember many of the names now but if I can find the original I think they are all noted. But it is me in back row third from right. Seated far right is Eddie Pratt, next to him Cliff. Watch this space for more names!

Oil painting of my father's mother done by my mother. Date unknown (will try to find out) but I would guess around early-60s. And yes, sadly she was a miserable as she looks; I never recall her being in the least bit fun - but that's what being a strict Baptist and being left by your husband for a young floozy during the war does for you, I guess.

Pear Tree in Autumn

Painting by my mother of the pear tree in the garden of my childhood home. Some years it turned this spectacular golden colour in autumn. Again date unknown but from the layout of the rest of the garden it's probably mid-60s, maybe later.

Oil paint on hardboard. Original is around A2 in size. Photographed by me with my Fuji point & shoot, and tidied up in Photoshop.

St Mary the Virgin, Cheshunt (Albumen)

When I was with 94-year-old my mother last weekend, helping her pack up to move into residential care, she gave me a fairly awful black and white photograph of the parish church in the town in which I grew up. The church is St Mary the Virgin at Cheshunt, Hertfordshire. Recognising the style of the print I know the photo was taken by my mother, probably in the early 1970s, from the park opposite the church. What's more she printed it herself on her home-made enlarger. Just the fact that she made the enlarger and got semi-decent prints from it is in itself amazing! But that's my mother.

Anyway here is a slightly enhanced scan of the totally nondescript 11x16cm original.

The version above is the original reinterpreted as an 1870s-ish Albumen print in Paint Shop Pro.

And there's a bit more detail over on my Zen Mischief weblog.

David Masey Grave

Grave in churchyard of St Nicholas, New Romney, Kent of David Masey (b 1807, d 1882) who was my great-great-grandfather and his wife. Also commemorated are a number of their family members (none in my direct line). I've been told that David Masey was variously a fisherman, greengrocer, fishmonger, boatman and a lifeboatman at Littlestone.

I had only a few minutes to find and photograph the headstone on Saturday; had I had more time I was hoping to be able to scour the churchyard for other Masey graves -- although sadly very many of the headstones are so weathered as to be unreadable. More research one of these days!

Scouts

Yours truly (centre) aged I think 12 (so in 1963) during preparations for the Scouts St George's Day Parade, which our troop led with drum band. I can roughly date this as the guy with the "leopard skin" (Vic) was our troop leader and left a year or so later at 16; the big gormless-looking lad helping him is Eric Castle who was (I think a year) younger than me, so he must have been 11 to be in the Scouts. Apart from being somewhere around Cheshunt I've no clue where this was. Again probably taken by my father on his Box Brownie.

I don't know who took this, but it's in my family history collection. This is me (centre, with hands in pockets and gold-rimmed glasses) with my parents at the opening of Noreen's blockbusting exhibition "Jolly Hockey Sticks" at Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood (now V&A MoC) in 1984. I was (almost) down to weight in those days as I had not long recovered from glandular fever. I was 33 and we'd been married not quite 5 years. Eeek; that's a lifetime ago! I wasn't grey then either.

Florence Elizabeth Cullingworth (nee Coker); my maternal grandmother. Taken in 1972 shortly before her death at the age of almost 89. Apparently she was a stunning redhead in her youth!Taken I think by my mother.
