power of the sun

spacepleb posted a photo:

Used to love doing this as a kid. Another light experiment - this was really tricky to get anywhere near right. It was very hard to be able to see the reflection of the sun on the lens and not get the shadow of the camera in the way of the sun's rays. I really wanted a little of the sun and the tree reflected in the magnifying lens at the same time for the feeling that the sun gives and takes life.

Canon EOS350D, Canon 18-55mm kit lens (55mm). f/20, 1/60 second ,ISO 200, handheld.

Lighting: Strong sunlight (obviously!) and Nikon SB28 to camera-right on 1/8 power to bring up the detail in the shadow and light the smoke; the flash should have been more powerful or closer. I wanted to emphasise how the magnifying glass can cast equal shadow as my fingers due to the immense refraction, but the burning leaf would benefit from more detail.

Lessons: Get someone else to hold the lens.

leaf

spacepleb posted a photo:

Ivy necktie. This is an attempt to photograph the lovely jewellery that Danny makes. I made a makeshift lightbox from some old tent-poles lying around and a white-ish cotton bedsheet (which needed doubling over to properly diffuse the light). The background is red-brown velvet.

Canon EOS 350D, Sigma 18-200 (200mm), f/16 1/2second ISO 400. Tripod and wireless release. Lightbox with various powered halogen spotlights from both sides and above.

Adjusted the levels inward slightly and applied a slight unsharp mask. Cloned two small shadows from the lighter side of the metal (one of these was a dust-ball on the sensor). Added a thin gold border colour-droppered from the ivy leaf and a wider border droppered from the velvet. Used Gimp/Linux throughout.

This shot has a strong colour cast towards the warmer end of the spectrum. During this shoot I learnt how to use the custom colour balance within the camera using a sheet of white paper inside the light box. Chuffed :) After this the exposure became much easier.

This shot was taken before lesson learnt, we ran out of time to properly apply the lesson... Next time.
