I have been dreaming of this one for a while - capturing the aurora behind the Cuillin mountains of Skye. Planning is not easy - a 5 hour drive from Aberdeen and the requirement for clear skies and auroral activity. I was only planning to catch the sunset here but arrived so late that I nearly missed it. Auroral activity was low but a brief display around 8pm showed up in my photos (not to the naked eye).
Panstarrs comet is in there too

The aurora borealis outside Aberdeen tonight. When I arrived around 2130 there was intense green clearly visible to the naked eye. It slowly faded and then at 2215hrs suddenly erupted. The sky lit up and rays shot up for a couple of minutes, but that was it. Despite cars passing and a couple of fumbled lens changes I got a shot but as usual didn't get the chance to stop and enjoy it! The action is by no means over tonight and there is possibility of more over the next couple of nights.

Another one from the 27th of March this year about 20 miles west of Aberdeen. This was close to the peak of the display with red rays shooting up from the intensifying ar. This marks half way to having enough darkness to photograph the aurora again!

Unexpected auroral activity yesterday. It peaked just after 11pm, and I have found a great location completely by chance. I have been looking for somewhere local to get a reflection, minimal light pollution, a good northern view, and a short travel distance and this ticked the boxes.
The aurora only appeared to be active for a short time. Quayman (Chapel of Garioch) got a very similar shot only a couple of minutes earlier

Last nights aurora as seen on the Moray coast. I was amazed at the amount of colour a long exposure has pulled out. I have taken a little artistic liberty and lifted the foreground exposure to make the sea little more visible. It's a shame it is so noisy. In hindsight I would do this again with a longer exposure at lower ISO, as everything is moving in the photo anyway

Tonight's aurora taken at Findlater on the Moray coastline. We had quite a drive to get some clear sky ( 1.5 hours) but thankfully it paid off! The single ray shooting upwards was the most exciting moment of activity was saw. Also in this photo is the conjunction between Venus and Jupiter in the lower left.
Aurora timelapse, Fedderate castle, Scotland

Kenny Muir posted a video:

A moderate auroral display in North East Scotland captured on Sunday 27th of February on arrival of a small CME. We were not expecting to see anything and had been content to photograph the stars as the sky was amazingly clear however it appeared about 11pm and the display was visible until the clouds came over around midnight.
The Kp was only 1 (rising to 4 through the night) and no aurorawatch (UK) alerts were triggered.

This is a remake of the previous timelapse. When I got in from shooting my hard drive died when copying over the files. I created the original film on my back up windows but photoshop was set to adobe RGB colour space. I have converted to sRGB and increased the exposure slightly on all files to make things a bit clearer.

It is also worth mentioning that the aurora wasn't clearly visible to the naked eye. The intensity wasn't sufficient enough to detect much in the way of colour with only a mild green tinge. A weak aurora will not always trigger the cone receptors at the back of the eye (which are responsible for detecting colour) as they are less sensitive than the rods (which detect B+W) .

Settings - 71 images, 30 seconds exposure, f1.4, ISO 500, 24mm

A tree silhouetted by an intensifying aurora in North East Scotland.
(taken at Kildrummy Castle car park testing out the conditions before trying to find the castle in the dark!)
There is unlikely to be much auroral activity in the next week or two as the most active sunspots have rotated out of view from Earth. The sunspot that caused the recent geomagnetic storms had a last stand on Friday with an X1.7 solar flare, much larger than the one that caused this but it was not earth directed with only a glancing blow yesterday afternoon (Kp 3)

A powerful storm but not quite of Carrington Event proportions

An auroral display far north of Scotland seen on a flight last night. The Kp was 1, and no register of any activity on the local magnetometer so no chance of seeing anything in Scotland.
It was part of an excellent aurora flight from Edinburgh with some of The Sky at Night team on board. The aeroplane flew very level to allow photographs but it was very turbulent and without a tripod this 20 second exposure does lack a bit of clarity. ISO 6400. Best viewed small.

A few aurora shots on my website

A weak auroral display close to the horizon on Saturday night. A nice bonus as I really wasn't expecting to see anything. Look out for the meteors!
