A female taken at Pitstone ponds on 25th May 2013 - I think this one is newly emerged as it was very loathe to fly - although it was a cold grey day! No surprises there then!

I don't really look for fungi at this time of year - but you couldn't miss this one! Taken at Frogmore lakes. These are supposed to be edible, but I have never tried them.

Also from my garden. This male has staked out a territory and patrols it every second that the sun is out. As soon as the sun goes in he lands on spreading-hedge parsley and waits for it to return!! Gave some great photo opportunities.

Orange tip butterfly - sadly deformed

Despite feeling sad for this malformed butterfly I was also perversely happy to see him in my garden - he can't fly, so obviously they are now breeding here!! I introduced hedge garlic a couple of years ago and it has spread like wildfire - but this alone justifies it!!

I've no idea why he is deformed - poor weather? certainly not chemicals as I don't use them. He lived for at least 3 days as I put him on a flower and he stayed there feeding.

A quick break from Portugal, these are some current shots, taken yesterday at a local Nature reserve - Maple Cross Conservation Society.

This treecreeper has decided to nest in a pile of old fence panels leaning against one of our outbuildings. A smart move as they are regularly predated by Great spotted Woodpeckers so this is probably a safe bet! When we moved them a couple of months ago we found 3 Peacock butterfllies hibernating between them - so this is obviously a useful habitat!

For any locals who don't know the reserve, it is just outside Rickmansworth in Herts : 40 acres, 2 lakes, reedbed, willow and alder carr, woodland and scrub - and 10 hides! Access is to members only, but it is cheap to join and a great reserve - more details here www.maplelodge.org/

Last of the Med gull shots from June last year, the last of my west country trip backlog and my last post for a while as I'm off on holiday to Portugal now!!

The Mediterranean Gulls courtship does comprise some ritual mirroring movements, pacing, nodding and bobbing, but also some begging and courtship feeding. Fascinating to watch - should have video'd this too!

Archives again - Keyhaven, June 2012. Rock pipit - I think! Actually he is all in one piece, so doing a flamingo impersonation! These were all over the shore out towards the fort, mostly juveniles, and many had pale legs for a rock pipit - but the beak size and dirty breasts make me think they are all rock - though I did see meadow pipits there too.

Archive June 2012, New forest. I've only seen these once before, at Thursley common, they have to be one of my fave dragons, just love that gold colour! This one is freshly emerged - the wings are still firming up. Another by product of looking for Gold - ringed dragons - and no I didn't find them!

Great to get up close to these, I haven't seen that many and usually too far for any shots, so filled my boots when I had this chance - in full breeding plumage too! Shame about the light of course.

More from the Archives, Prawle point during our West country tour last June.
Had to chase these between showers on a grey and blustery day, so mostly just record shots - but was quite pleased with this one.This is a female. These are pretty rare in the UK, though there are signs of recovery where they are being helped in Devon.
