We came across this Roman city at dusk by accident and had an amazing time climbing over the remarkably well-preserved ruins.

Originally posted June 2011. New scan posted May 2013 - still not very sharp because it was a long exposure (with the camera resting on a rock) and the warm evening breeze was blowing her hair.

Best viewed on black...

Mid-day, midsummer 1975, no wind ... even in Devon, UK, it was very hot. But the sea was wonderfully, refreshingly cool. We had both been swimming but I dashed back to my camera to capture a couple of shots as Marie emerged from the water. I under-exposed to recreate how it looked - a near-silhouette in the dazzling sun.

Re-posted as a new scan including most of the original frame - I now prefer this version with more background to give an idea of the expanse of calm sea.

Emerging from the calm sea on a very hot day. Deliberately exposed for the highlights to make it a silhouette as this is how she looked with the intense sun behind her.

Another "Zeitgeist" set of snaps from the 1970s, enjoying a day on the river boats "punts" in Oxford (England) with friends.

These were different from the Cambridge punts as you stood in the boat rather than on decking - slightly less hazardous!

I noticed this plant outside a neighbour's house in winter when it had lost its leaves and the shapes reminded me of an electric gas discharge. I find it interesting how nature's beautiful geometry throws up similar patterns in quite different situations.

I found this nice action shot of Flora climbing over the rocks on Great Perhaver Beach (Cornwall, UK). Back in Gorran Haven this week, I was enjoying doing just the same thing this morning - but I think Flora was ~~probably~~ definitely more photogenic...

Difficult to explain this image in words - something about the ambiguity of personal scale. One of my favorites when originally printed in 1972, the neg. was badly damaged (by getting wet and sticking to another) and none of the prints were traceable. Re-washing and drying plus cleaning up in PS has fortunately restored it.

Taken on the same winter evening as "Nature's throne" and "Moonlit sprite".

Still on the subject of out-takes / in-between shots, here are a couple of Bea, the heroic model for my "Naiad" series taken on a sunny but quite cold day in April. This is her kindly retrieving my hat which had fallen into the stream while I was up in the tree to get a good angle on the waterfall - looking too human for a mythical water nymph but still very nice...

Another view of Hungry Bay, Bermuda - these derelict trees and deserted shoreline reminded me strongly of our Cold-War anxieties of a nuclear wipe-out - maybe we should start worrying again?

Just a snap showing a different view of Susie - not only beautiful but practical. Glamorous gardening in Gorran Haven!

Note the large green-leaf plant top centre is an echium which is found growing naturally in the UK only in a few sheltered villages on the south Cornwall coast. In its third (and final) year it produces a dramatic spire of small blue flowers over 12 ft. (4 M) tall.

Susie in white & red

Dressed only in a wrap of white silk and the poppies.

This is the intended photo as Susie ran through the poppy field as a flower spirit - see the preparation and "Unravelled" (caution: nudity), posted yesterday. I have re-posted this at higher resolution to match them (this photo originally posted July 2009).

Susie had kindly volunteered to model for an idea I had to represent the serious issue of widows from the First World War (see "Remembrance") but it was such a nice day we went on to take a whole series of fun shots as well.

We were lucky to be able to use this amazing self-sown sea of poppies, which I had spotted the previous weekend from a road on the other side of the vally, because the next day the farmer plowed the field.

On the theme of out-takes here is an "in between" shot of M helping Susie to arrange her dress which consisted of just a long sheet of silk wound around her - it rapidly unravelled as she ran through the poppy field. A wonderful early summer day near Bath, UK.
