Getting Ready

It is exciting to see how Beijing is preparing for the Olympic Games in 2008. The Olympic Stadium is under construction as you can see in the picture. The structure is huge. People call it Bird's Nest for obvious reasons. The architecture is not traditional Chinese and not western. Its just totally new and cool in my eyes. Whoever hosts the next Olympic Games in 2012 will have a hard time to come up with something even more impressive.
I like how the lady is bicycling in front of the stadium. Bicycling will of course be part of the Games and is something I like a lot myself.

Everybody loves Mangos. Well, good Mangos that is.
I've had mangos from all kind of places. Indian mangos are the best in my opinion.
I don't know what contributes to their full flavor and sweetness. Is it the weather, are they different genetically or is it that you can get them fresh at every corner?

Everything from milk to refrigerators gets moved by bike. Even gas tanks.
This one here looks a bit too rusty and dented for my taste. Lets hope that it doesn't turn into a booster rocket.

One of the older parts of Beijing which is located east south east of the Bai Hai Park. Even with compass I got lost there for about ten minutes but at least I got some pictures out of it.

This is one of the riksha drivers who gives tourist a ride through the Hutongs. Hutongs are the old parts of Beijing with narrow streets and sometimes quite some off road character. Many of his customers are not the slimmest ones, it was hot and the air was thick. I can imagine how tired he must be.

This was taken in an alleyway next to the Bell Tower located in the north of Beijing. The contrast between the palish environment and the colorful toys jumped right at me.

I like his expression. Proud and relaxed at the same time. Everybody in the street was busy with small small things and he was just standing there and being himself. Simply a cool guy.

My bikes get stolen all the time (so far I lost 4). I know I have an insurance but the paper work and filing with the police is just a pain in the behind. So I invested 120$ into the toughest lock ever. Once I was in flower shop for 5! minutes and my bike was locked to a huge metal post which was part of a building. Of course it got stolen again.
Finally I realised preventing the actual process of stealing is useless. The only way out was preventing the thiefs from wanting my bike. So I painted it. This way the resale value the thiefs could get dropped to Zero. Of course I still keep locking it but since then nobody stole my bicycle again.
