CHIJMES is a beautifully structured historic building complex in Singapore that has been gazetted as a national monument. It once housed a Catholic convent school known as the Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus (CHIJ) and their convent quarters known as Caldwell House.

With a history of over 130 years, the complex is located in the Civic District of Singapore. It has been redeveloped & restored into a dining and an entertainment centre.

This road was built by convict labour in 1833 which started at the south of Thomson Bridge (now the Elgin Bridge). From 1885 to 1894, steam tramways plied the full length of the road from the town area to the New Harbour (now known as the Keppel Harbour). As the trams could not face the competition of rickshaws, they then ceased operations. The Singapore Electric Train Company had its trams running along the road from 1905 to 1927. Trolley buses also used South Bridge Road as one of their routes which they competed with the "mosquito bus" until 1962 when the current motor bus system was introduced.
Today it is one of the major roads leading into Chinatown.

At the new Fullerton Pavilion, the restaurant on the upper deck is not occupied yet. The security was kind enough to allow me up the deck for some shots... Here is just another view...

Some are with tourism organisation while others are on their own like this one here at Clarke Quay waiting for tourists... They may be phased out pretty soon as the young are not llikely to take it on as a career.

To me, the Sultan Mosque reminds me of Arabian Tales like Prince of Persia or Ali Baba. The trading activities like restaurants, souvenirs, sandalwood, perfumes, fabric, crafts, carpets & even street names bears Arabic influence. Over the background is the Civic District cityscape.

pp: Notice the trail lights? Frankly I can't figure out how it register that way. All I know during my exposure, the car went into a wrong turn. The driver reverse & just drove off right. By sheer luck it works well...

Elgin Bridge is believed to have existed at its current location as an unnamed footbridge as early as 1819, the year Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles (founder of Singapore) landed on Singapore. It was the only bridge across the Singapore River, linking the Chinese community on the southern side to the Indian merchants of High Street on the northern side.

Just across the river is the Ministry of Communications & the Arts (MICA Building). The tower on the left that looks like a crane is just one of the support for Reverse Bungee Jumping at Clarke Quay

This shot is out of tripod limits. The camera was placed outside the parapet using my live view swivel display for guide. Just rest it on the glass wall and fire handheld hoping for the best. The result shows the reflection by the glass wall.
