Grotto [ExploReD]

Grotto Geyser is a fountain-type geyser located in the Upper Geyser Basin in Yellowstone National Park in the United States. Grotto Geyser is the namesake for the group of geysers that includes Grotto Fountain Geyser, South Grotto Fountain Geyser, Indicator Spring, Spa Geyser, and Rocket Geyser.

Grotto really looks like a head, two eyes and a nose sticking up. I have been to Yellowstone twice now and it is a very interesting rock formation that really would be very impressive to see erupt, since it is connected to a geyser that is one of the largest in the world.

I saw a beautiful photo of this lighthouse today on the stream of one of my contacts and decided to see if there was a nice photo in my own archives.
And yes, there was a nice photo, that should be worthy of sharing.

The Oregon coast has lot's of lighthouses and nice rock formations that make nice photos. one has to be there the good time of day though. As usual we didn't have enough time to stay a long time in one place.

Bull moose

From last year: a photo of one of the majestic and especially very large moose bulls that we got quitte close to.
There was a small water between us and this bull, but that is probably not a lot of security in case they get cranky. For me, the gentle nature of this giant was much more reassuring at this specific and memorable moment.

Just wanted to let you know I am still alive ;-)
Very busy at work so hardly any time to photograph, let alone upload some pics. I have the hope that I will be able to do some walking this weekend...

This photo was taken from quitte some distance in Yellowstone, but seeing and photographing a grizzly is a very unique experience (unless you are called ChicagoBob).

These are Black Bellied Wistling Ducks. In the USA the only state where one can find them is Florida. There are more in Mexico and South America. They have big somewhat awkward paws.

Some more or less useful facts from wiki:
- Although many species of bird imitate other birds, the Northern Mockingbird is the best known in North America for doing so. It imitates not only birds but also other animals and mechanical sounds such as car alarms. As convincing as these imitations may be to humans, they often fail to fool other birds.

- Mockingbirds were reportedly able to pick out a threatening person from a crowd. Researchers had one person stand near a mockingbird nest and touch it, while other people avoided the nest. Later, the mockingbirds recognized the intruder and attacked him, while ignoring the other people.

- This is the state bird of Arkansas, Florida, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas.

- President Thomas Jefferson had a pet mockingbird named Dick.

- The traditional American lullaby "Hush Little Baby" :
Hush little baby, don't say a word,
Mama's gonna buy you a mockingbird.
And if that mockingbird don't sing,

In the USA this bird only lives in Florida.

In Dutch this bird is called a 'Koerlan' (een Kraanvogelachtige) and I never heard of this name before I saw this bird in Florida.

The Limpkin is a bird that looks like a large rail but is genetically closer to cranes. It is the only extant species in the genus Aramus and the family Aramidae. The Limpkin is a somewhat large bird, 66 cm long, with a wingspan of about 102 cm and a weight of about 1.1 kg.

It feeds on molluscs, with the diet dominated by apple snails of the genus Pomacea. Its name derives from its seeming limp when it walks.

Seen in the Circle B Bar Reserve, near Lakeland, FL.

Young Purple Gallinule

The American Purple Gallinule is a "swamp hen" in the rail family.
A medium-sized rail (33 centimetres in length) with big yellow feet, purple-blue plumage with a green back, and red and yellow bill.

Juveniles are brown overall with a brownish olive back. Some hints of blue are already appearing on this youngster. I think that their feet keep growing while they grow older.

Photographed in the Circle B Bar Reserve against a wild back ground of swamp ;-)

I tried to spot these birds on two earlier trips to Florida but was unsuccessful so far. This time I found them and thought they were beautiful.
