Sutro Baths and Waves

Over the years, the Sutro Baths have fallen out of public favor. They have since been slowly reclaimed by the elements, including the voracious waves that lap at the remaining walls.

The Sutro Baths are an important historical landmark in San Fran, and worth a visit. Back in the turn of the 20th Century this was a popular public pool and baths. Ocean water was pumped in and used for health purposes. The large public pools were housed in beautiful wrought iron and glass structures, bringing in sunlight.

Beach Strawberries

On our way to the SutroBaths ruins, we happened upon a hill where I found lots of beach strawberries. I haven't seen these berries since my childhood days spent at summer camp, when we would walk down to the beach, and our camp care-takers had to drag me from the berry-covered sand dunes. Likewise, Tai and Loong and Andi had to drag me from these hills.

After Musee Mecanique, we headed over to the Wave Organ, at the end of a long bit of man-made land. The Wave Organ was a public art piece constructed in the 80s. Metal pipes feed into the surrounding waters and bring visitors the strange and gutteral gurglings of the bay. Here, you also find concrete bits salvaged from destroyed historical San Francisco buildings.

Musee Mecanique

Then, Loong took us to Fisherman's Wharf, where we ran around the Musee Mecanique. Basically it's a big ol coin-operated machine gallery. You throw quarters in to watch mechanical ladies dance, people ride around on ferris wheels, and have your fortune read.

It was so cool. We spent ages in there.

Prayer Tower Totem Pole

The boys were ready to leave, but I really really wanted a closer look. I saw someone go into the property, so I came up and asked them about the tower. The lady was kind enough to let me in and take a look up close.

It was so pretty! Like a permanent Christmas Tree of found objects and San Francisco History.

In the back yard, along the wall, the tower's creator had been arranging wheels of different kinds in a sort of gallery. Apparently he'd been collecting all sort of rusted and decaying bits all over the city. In fact, he even had an old anchor from a famous San Francisco ship that had been salvaged from the Bay.

After much seeking, Loong and Tai and I finally found the Prayer Tower Totem Pole. It was created by a crazy eco dude in the 70s. Which is probably exactly what you were thinking.

Tucked away in the tranquility of Mark and Kat's bedroom was Hansdsome Pete. I took a break from the grad party and came in to say hello. Pete was as sweet and as handsome as the last time I'd seen him - when he was a wee kitten that had wandered into Mark's life. We took some photos. H. Pete was a little perplexed by the presence of a mouse on the bed.

We got to Mark n Kat's just in time for the tail end of Mark's graduation celebration. And Mark n Kat caught the tail end of my film! I had wanted to photograph them in their garden, but at least you get to see the garden...

On our way to Sunnyvale, we took a detour to see the Frenchman's Tower, near Stanford. Mysterious structure. No one knows why he'd built it.

Old, lavish cemetery. Trailing vines reclaim the stonework until it too is but a graveyard.

Pets Rest featured some of the most whimsical pet tombstones I'd ever seen (yeah I've been to more than one pet cemetery). "Beloved Puddle" is certainly one of the best.

There were also many Russain/Eastern European family pets here. Many had even came over from old country!

After breakfast with Andi's family, we were off to explore the lower Bay Peninsula on our way to Mark & Kat's house, where more grad celebrations were scheduled.

Having studied up on the bizarre attractions of road-sde California, we had plenty of stops on the way!

First up, was Colma, the City of the Deeeaaaaad. No, really. There are more dead people in Colma than live ones. It is mostly a place of cemeteries.

We absolutely had to stop at the Pets Rest Pet Cemetery. At once hilarious and heart-breaking, this was one of my favorite sights on our trip.

In San Francisco, we stayed at Andi's place (she's since moved down to SoCal). She was very hospitable and gave us homemade goodies to eat. Also, after the graduation, her parents were kind enough to invite us to her grad dinner.

Andi & Mark's graduation happened during our road trip, so we made sure to hurry and get to San Francisco in time to attend their ceremony!
