The light was really spectacular that day, because of the dark clouds approaching from the south

Advreck Castle

Standing on a rocky promontory jutting out into Loch Assynt in Sutherland, north west Highland, Scotland, Ardvreck Castle is a ruined castle dating from the 16th century.

The ruins can be reached by driving along the A837 which follows the north shore of Loch Assynt from the village of Inchnadamph. Care should be taken when walking around the site as falling masonry is a possible danger.

The castle is said to be haunted by two ghosts, one a tall man dressed in grey who is supposed to be related to the betrayal of Montrose and may even be Montrose himself. The second ghost is that of a young girl. The story tells that the MacLeods procured the help of Clootie (a Scottish name for the Devil, deriving from 'cloot', meaning one division of a cleft hoof) to build the castle and in return the daughter of one of the MacLeod chieftains was betrothed to him as payment. In despair of her situation, the girl threw herself from one of the towers and was killed.

Rhue derives from An Rubha which means 'headland' in Gaelic. The full name of the area is 'RudhaCadail' which in Gaelic means 'the Point (i.e. headland) of the Sleepy People'.

Legend has it that the name came from sailors found asleep but quite unharmed on the rocks (where the lighthouse is now) after their boat was shipwrecked on a stormy night. The settlement is shown on earlier maps as "Ard-a-chadail", the 'village' of the sleepy people.

The Forth Bridge is a cantilever railway bridge over the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland, to the east of the Forth Road Bridge, and 14 kilometres (9 mi) west of central Edinburgh.

It was opened on 4 March 1890, and spans a total length of 2,528.7 metres (8,296 ft). It is often called the Forth Rail Bridge or Forth Railway Bridge to distinguish it from the Forth Road Bridge, although it has been called the "Forth Bridge" since its construction, and was for over seventy years the sole claimant to this name.

The bridge connects Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh, with Fife, leaving the Lothians at Dalmeny and arriving in Fife at North Queensferry; it acts as a major artery connecting the north-east and south-east of the country. Described by the Collins Encyclopaedia of Scotland as "the one immediately and internationally recognised Scottish landmark", it is a Category A listed building and was nominated by the British government in May 2011 for addition to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Scotland.

The bridge was begun in 1883, took 7 years to complete, cost the lives of 63 men and nearly 3.5 million pounds of metal and used 10 times as much steel as the Eiffel Tower. It was deliberately chosen to look strong, due to the collapse 4 years earlier of the first Tay Bridge.

Until 1917, when the Quebec Bridge was completed, the Forth Bridge had the longest single cantilever bridge span in the world. It still has the world's second-longest single span. The bridge and its associated railway infrastructure is owned by Network Rail Infrastructure Limited.

Of the north ;)

Ceannabeinne Beach near Durness in the far north-west of Scotland. Almost no people on this beach - guess it's too far ;-) And don't be fooled - with temperatures around 12°C on this sunny June day, this is nothing like the Caribbean in reality.

Neist Point is a popular viewpoint on the most westerly point of Skye. It has had a lighthouse since 1909.

Smoo Cave is a large combined sea cave and freshwater cave in Durness in Sutherland, Highland, Scotland.

I didn't flash - the light on the rocks is ambient lighting.

Buachaille Etive Mòr

On the way to the Isle of Skye we chose the route via Glen Coe. The Buachaille Etive Mòr (gaelic for "the great herdsman/shepherd of Etive") is a distinctive mountain at the entrace to Glen Coe.

The Halo around the sun could also be seen without the camera, so this is not a flare, but a natural phenomenon

Mont Aiguille (el. 2085 m./6841 ft.) is a mountain in the Vercors Plateau of the French Prealps, located 58 km (36 mi) south of Grenoble. The mountain is most noted for its first ascent in 1492. Charles VIII ordered that the peak be climbed, so one of his servants, Antoine de Ville, made the ascent using a combination of ladders and other artificial aids. The ascent is described by François Rabelais in his Quart Livre. This was the first recorded climb of any technicality, and has been said to mark the beginning of mountaineering.
