Rhue derives from An Rubha which means 'headland' in Gaelic. The full name of the area is 'RudhaCadail' which in Gaelic means 'the Point (i.e. headland) of the Sleepy People'.

Legend has it that the name came from sailors found asleep but quite unharmed on the rocks (where the lighthouse is now) after their boat was shipwrecked on a stormy night. The settlement is shown on earlier maps as "Ard-a-chadail", the 'village' of the sleepy people.

From Tuscany to Scotland :-)

The Forth Bridge is a cantilever railway bridge over the Firth of Forth in the east of Scotland, to the east of the Forth Road Bridge, and 14 kilometres (9 mi) west of central Edinburgh.

It was opened on 4 March 1890, and spans a total length of 2,528.7 metres (8,296 ft). It is often called the Forth Rail Bridge or Forth Railway Bridge to distinguish it from the Forth Road Bridge, although it has been called the "Forth Bridge" since its construction, and was for over seventy years the sole claimant to this name.

The bridge connects Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh, with Fife, leaving the Lothians at Dalmeny and arriving in Fife at North Queensferry; it acts as a major artery connecting the north-east and south-east of the country. Described by the Collins Encyclopaedia of Scotland as "the one immediately and internationally recognised Scottish landmark", it is a Category A listed building and was nominated by the British government in May 2011 for addition to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Scotland.

The bridge was begun in 1883, took 7 years to complete, cost the lives of 63 men and nearly 3.5 million pounds of metal and used 10 times as much steel as the Eiffel Tower. It was deliberately chosen to look strong, due to the collapse 4 years earlier of the first Tay Bridge.

Until 1917, when the Quebec Bridge was completed, the Forth Bridge had the longest single cantilever bridge span in the world. It still has the world's second-longest single span. The bridge and its associated railway infrastructure is owned by Network Rail Infrastructure Limited.

I used a spotlight to make the cypresses stand out a bit more - else they would've been almost completely black

Smoo Cave is a large combined sea cave and freshwater cave in Durness in Sutherland, Highland, Scotland.

I didn't flash - the light on the rocks is ambient lighting.

Shot from the bridge under the round tower on this photo (www.flickr.com/photos/dcdead/6641991393/in/photostream/). You can see the bridge from where the other photo was taken in this one (beside the heating plant).

By the way: The Ferrari boat is new. The one you can see in the old shot burned down, but the owner got a new one ;-)

Frankfurt Skyline

One of the best spots to photograph the skyline of Frankfurt. It's a much used railway bridge, which vibrates quite a bit when a train passes. So timing the beginning of a long exposure is crucial.

This is a DRI (Dynamic Range Increase) photo. I took 5 exposures, ranging from 1 second (ISO 100) to 30 Seconds (ISO 400) and blended them manually in Photoshop. One shot isn't enough to get details in both, highlights and shadows.

Shot with the 24-105 L at 75mm. I'm still stunned how much detail the 5d mkII captures, compared to the D700, when looking at the photo fully magnified.

After The Rain

Between the photo i posted the other day and this one, there was a short but hefty hail shower. After that the sky cleared up again and the sun came out.

Two horizontal shots (one for the lower part) and one for the upper (tilted the camera up) part. I had to stitch it manually, because none of my panorama programs could do it...

Tripod test: 45 second exposure with very strong wind after today's storm.

I was really lucky again - the blue sky came out for about 20 minutes - after that it began to hail...

I'm using the Haida 1000x ND filter. I had a B+W before, but it produced a strong red color cast and it cost 90€ with 77mm thread, compared to the 35€ i paid for the Haida, which produces far better colors.
