Walking in shallow water, it hunts fish, frogs and large insects. It catches fish by holding its bill open in the water until a fish is found. I observed it stirring up the bottom with a "dabbing" motion of its foot.

Fascinating creature - I spent the better part of an hour watching it.

The wood stork has been listed as endangered, but seems to be making a comeback; it is on the "Least Concern" list by the World Conservation Union.

A large bird, 33–45 in. tall with a wingspan of 58–71 in.

A bit intimidating in person... has a rather prehistoric look around the eyes...
