Originally built as a metre-gauge line, the Bolan Pass Railway was reconstructed as a broad-gauge section in the 'eighteen nineties. It is eighty-six miles long, and the aggregate rise from Sibi, at the foot of the incline, to Kolpur, the summit before reaching Quetta, is 5,463 vertical feet. This great ascent necessitates long stretches graded at 1 in 25 and 1 in 33—throughout both of which the line is double—as well as climbs of 1 in 40 and easier gradients.

First Train From Europe To Asia.

Dream of connecting Asia with Europe via rail link is not so new however was un-cherished on account of various political, economical, geographical and technical issues. Last year on 14th august 2009 a first ever container train was run between the capitals of Pakistan and Turkey , Islamabad and Istanbul via Tehran, Iran crossing a distance of 6,500-kilometer railroad in 15 days.

The running of train was result of a high level meeting at the 18th Regional Planning Council of the ECO (Economic Co-Operation Organization) held in March 2008 at Islamabad , aimed to enhance regional cooperation among ECO member states and facilitate the socio-economic progress of member states.

This year a return train was arranged from Istanbul to Islamabad via Tehran (Picture above) . The train crossed Iran-Pakistan border on 8th August 2010 and is scheduled to reach Islamabad on 14th August 2010.

MirpiurKhas to Zero point is a broad gauge single line section connecting Pakistan with India. the line crosses one of the major deserts of the world "Thar desert" known in India as Rajhastan desert. Along the way the the train commuters watch spectacular scenarios . oasis , villages with mud huts, women clad in colourful attire etc. The area is replete with many species of snakes hence is a heaven for the snake charmers. this snake charmer was moving along the track near "Chhor" station.
