The rear end of the Bomaderry flour looks a little out of place above pretty Kiama harbour.

An NGYF grain hopper is the rear wagon. Built as a light 76t coal hopper, a roof was later fitted to convert it to a covered hopper wagon. Most NGYFs wear graffiti.

A large Orb Weaver spider, underneath view. There were a number of them on webs suspended between trees in a small park in Redfern, inner Sydney. By the look of the collected and 'packaged' insects, there was no shortage of food for them.

A pair of Wedged-tail Eagles were circling just above the road. By the time I stopped the car and pointed the camera, they had already risen quite high, but I got this eagle for the record. They have a wingspan of 2.2 metres (7ft3in) or more.

A local bus on the highway causeway at Burrill Lake. I presume the 8 knot limit does not apply.

I don't know what sort of bus it is, but I have Flickr friends who like buses! :)

Burrill Lake is just south of Ulladulla on the south coast of NSW.

The Princes Highway is part of national route 1. It is the secondary highway between Sydney and Melbourne and is very scenic, but longer and slower. It's primary function is to service the cities and towns along the coast between the two capitals.

homes close to water

I was amazed how close these houses are to the water, with very little height above the water level. I suppose it is a tidal lake open to the sea, and so is unlikely to flood, but sea level rise could be an issue. In the meantime, what a great location and view!

An Ipec truck passes through Burrill Lake on the Princes Highway.

The Highway crosses a narrow section of the lake on a low causeway, with a short bridge at the southern end.

The sun is setting for these locos and wagons that worked around the steelworks for many years. They slowly decay in neglected sidings. Part of the works they served is in the background.

It's late afternoon and hot, 40 degrees C (104F). Two coal trains cross on the Bluescope steelworks main. Hazy Mt Keira forms the backdrop. The main becomes single track at the curve, and the empty is waiting for the loaded to clear so it can proceed.

The steelworks is close to the coast and summer temperatures are normally moderated by the maritime effect. However, on this day a nor'wester was blowing from the hot interior of the continent, causing the unusually high temperature.

The Pt Kembla steelworks coal trains are run by Pacific National under contract to BHP Billiton, and load at BHPB's Eloura colliery about 10km away. Three locos are allocated to the operation, 8124, 8135 (both in this scene) and 8117. 8124 is ex-NRC and is still in NRC livery, 8117 was also in NRC livery but has been repainted.
