Portrait of legendary Civil Rights Era photographer Matt Herron. I took his portrait yesterday in one of US Senate building . This man is truly legendary figure: in 1964 he organized a team of eight photographers, The Southern Documentary Project - to record the social change in South as part of as civil rights movement. In 1965 year Matt won the World Press Photo Contest for his picture of a Mississippi highway patrolman attacking a five-year-old child. He also serving as bridge officer, navigator and photographer for the first two Greenpeace anti-whaling voyages. He was first mate and photographer on the Sea Shepherd's voyage to the ice floes of the St. Lawrence to attempt to disrupt the harp seal hunt. He was arrested on the ice and spent six days in a Canadian jail... takestockphotos.com/pages/herron.html
I spoke yesterday with Mr. Herron about investigation of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, coz he was one of the first sceptic of the Oswald-as-lone-assassin theory. He began cooperating with District Attorney Jim Garrison, who was investigating this case and he have been in Dallas on the day of assassination and he collect alot of material about this case. So now Matt Herron writing a book about this. It was interesting talk - and I took his portrait using natural light from huge window in this Senate building with Nikon F5 and Pentax Super Takumar 50mm f1.4 lens. I use here Kodak Ektar 100 film. Coz light was pretty soft I use max open aperture to create soft portrait.
