Greylag Goose (Anser anser)
Suddenly they all took off!.....dancing over the water performing aeriel ballet. I love how the wing of the first goose is actually touching the water with the low angle of the sun highlighting the rippled reflections.
A beautiful Sunny Autumn Day at Thurne on the Norfolk Broads. We visited Lisa's Uncle and Cousins while they were on holiday for the week. Many thanks to Uncle Vic and family for a cracking day, It was really good to see you all again.

Love the Cormorant that just landed on the sail of the wind pump, completeing the composition.

Taken with my Nikon D3s & 24-70 Nikkor f/2.8 lens at 36mm. ISO 200 1/200 sec f/10 using Nikon Circular Polarising filter.

Foxley Wood is a 4000 year old ancient woodland and now a nature reserve with the Norfolk Naturalist Trust.

I love the composition of the pathway and how the sun is shining through the autumn canopy of the trees, highliting and shading the plants below.

The light makes the picture look like an impressionist watercolour painting - Absolutely beautiful!
Life begins at 40 they say, well I am not 40 until July but I thought I would treat myself now and have my 40th Birthday present early to cheer myself up, as the last 18 months have been pretty dire.

I managed by luck to get hold of a new D3s whilst it appears the rest of the country are on back order from Nikon.

The D3s is absolutely amazing paired up with the new Nikon Nano Crystal coat lenses, images are tack sharp with great contrast and colour saturation.

Taken with my D300 & new Nikon 24-70 f/2.8G ED lens, 13 second exposure at f/22 under exposed by 2 stops.

Wymondham Abbey....A Winter's Tale

New Year's Day and the first snowfall of 2010 on Wymondham Abbey.

I managed to get the timing of this shot just right (patiently freezing for an hour on the spot!) as the snow stopped and the sun came out briefly from behind a cloud, low and bright to the left it gave brilliant golden highlights to this composition.

The Abbey is such a special place steeped in history and I love taking pictures of it.

What a magical start to the new year.

I wish peace, love, joy and happiness to all my flickr friends in 2010.

Saker Falcon - Falco cherrug
The Saker Falcon is found on the plains, steepes and high altitude plateaux of Central Asia.
It feeds on a variety of small animals, such as ground squirrels and other rodents including lizards and birds. An aggressive falcon relentless in its pursuit of prey and a favourite of Arab Falconers.

European Eagle Owl - Bubo bubo bubo

The largest species of owl, the European Eagle Owl is approx 0.7 metres in height. Eagle Owls can take prey as large as buzzards or herons, however when food is scarce they will catch earthworms and fish.

This beautiful bird flew silently over our heads during a fantastic display and was just pure magic!

The Leopard is my favourite big cat and the Snow Leopard just has that extra magic and mystery , coupled with unrivalled beauty.

Inhabiting areas of coniferous forest, alpine meadows and rocky areas of mountains in Central Asia and the Himalayas the Snow Leopard generally hunts alone and covers a territory of up to 100 square km. Only during the breeding season wil a male and female hunt together. This companionship continues whilst the female is caring for her cubs. Between one and five are born in the spring or early summer.

The Snow Leopard is extrenmely rare in the wild being hunted for it's fur and killed to protect livestock.

Whilst classified as a "big cat" the Snow Leopard has some "small cat" characteristics; it does not rore and it feeds in a crouched position.

The underparts of a snow leopards paws are covered with cushions of hair to protect the pads from the cold and distribute weight more evenly in the snow.

I took this picture in bright sunshine through hidious reflections bouncing off the the glass from the Snow Leopard's enclosure. The circular polarising filter done an excellent job in cutting out all of the reflections. As the enclosure was very dimmly lit there was not a great amount of colour in the picture so I have converted to the image to black and white, which given the challenging light conditions, I am extremely pleased with the result.
The Common Buzzard - Buteo buteo
can usually be found hunting over open land throughout its range across Europe into Asia.

They eat mainly small mammals but will take a varied diet of snakes, lizards, pheasant and rabbit.

The males perform a spectacular aeriel display to attract a mate before the begginning of spring. This performance is known as the "roller coaster" where the male will rise up high in the sky and the soar down in a spiral.

Having lived in Wymondham for the past 18 years, I have always wanted to take this classic composition of the Abbey with the West Tower positioned through the ruins of the Chapter House Arch.

To take the picture, you need to be standing in the meadow to the side of the Abbey which is privately owned by a charitable Trust founded by The Revd. William Papillon (vicar from 1788 to 1836) to which the public do not have access.

In purchasing parcels of land around the Abbey (including the East Tower ruins which had been privately owned) and moving a public highway away from the building enlarging the churchyard and Ha Ha to south in 1833, Papillon created the landscape we enjoy today.

Papillon also purchased the meadow with its remaining monastic ruins and determined that this should only be let for agricultural purposes only in perpetuity, the income received to be used for educational purposes to benefit the children of Wymondham.

Following the renervation work completed to the Ha Ha wall, which divides the meadow from the Abbey to prevent the sheep from escaping (see previous picture below) the Trust opened the meadow up to the public to view the renervation works, and Englsih Heritage gave a guided walk and talk of the surviving Abbey ruins within the meadow.

A definate once in lifetime moment for me. Many thanks to the Trust for allowing me the privilage to take this very special picture.

I took this at RSPB MInsmere. As James was feeling left out of Flickr given all of the pictures of his sister on Explore. James will be 9 next week and always pulls funny faces when I attempt to take his picture so this is quite a rare nice portrait. The light was not brilliant, so had to crank the ISO up to 1000. Still nice colour saturation and Bokeh from my 200mm Nikkor.
