Explore, May 21, 2010 #217

This is a series of photos documentingthe aftermath of multiple days of rioting. The series of photos is taken at the intersection of Rama IV and Soi Ngam Duplee where thugs burnt huge tire barriers and attacked troops stationed up the road with a multitude of weapons, genuine and homemade. There was a bank on each corner. On the right used to be a Kasikorn Bank branch (completely gutted). On the left is a CIMB bank which was badly damaged but not burnt.

There used to be a huge, medieval wall here constructed of tires, razorwire and sharpened bamboo poles. It was bulldozed in the military operation yesterday morning.

Central World, Bangkok's largest shopping mall, the second largest in Asia, has been destroyed by fires. Reports indicate that the fire, started by protesters shortly after their leaders' surrender, blazed on for hours. Fire crews could not get on the scene and the department store's own fire crews were unable to stop the blaze.

Last sad scene before darkness. What will the night bring.....??

The Bangkok Bank across from my condo in Chan Road near the intersection with Narathiwas Road was attacked by about 20 thugs on motorcycles. They blockaded the road, threw Molotov cocktails and rock into the building causing a fire. They also flipped over a police pickup which was parked in front of the bank (it was left there for the last 2 mths). No police or fire brigade for at least 15-20mins. There is a gas station across the road. Scary….

Wider angle view showing big fire in the center and smaller fire at Asoke / Sukhumvit Intersection. Just announced that red shirt terrorist leaders surrendered. The larger fire seems to near Samyan intersection.

Red-shirt protesters who did not agree with the decision by the red-shirt protesters to call off the protest have stirred up chaos around the Ratchaprasong area. They've rallied others who also disagree with the call for an end of the rally to regather at the Victory Monument. They've set fire to parts of Central World (ZEN), set the tyres in front of Central Chidlom on fire and blown up gas cylinders in front of the National Police Office and electrical units in Din Daeng area.

The red shirted thugs are now engaged in random, and as for now, uncontrolled acts of arson and destruction. They should be shot on the spot.

The view from my condo at 10am this morning. The military has commenced operations to secure their perimeter around the protest site. The view is towards Rama IV Road and Lumpini Park. I also have military helicopters constantly flying overhead.... hard to work!

The following series shows the scene from Patpong, Silom Road (Front Line), and Sathorn Roads. The last few shots in the series show the aftermath of a deadly confrontation between troops and armed thugs outside the Shell petrol station on Sathorn Road (the Australian Embassy is right next door).
