Takahē are extremely rare birds, only found in preserves in New Zealand. These two were completely unconcerned by the few of us who were trying to get an up-close view.

The Zealandia park is really huge - about 1 square mile - all enclosed in a high tech fence. The fence keeps out just about every kind of mammal that would threaten the birds that hang out inside the sanctuary.

Zealandia is a really amazing bird sanctuary in New Zealand. We visited during the day to see a variety of native birds, then returned late at night for a special kiwi hunt. No photos from the night-time visit, but we did get to see 5 kiwis as they were foraging.

An addition to my series of animals and their numbers. We saw this guy (girl?) while hiking along the Union Mine Track inside Zealandia. They number all of the fence posts so that they can record where Tuatara (a very rare salamander) are spotted in their preserve.

Clever Kākā Feeder

Feeding the Kaka's involved quite a clever weight-based feeder. There's a platform that triggers the lid on the feeder to open, but only when a bird as heavy as a Kaka stands on it. The little birds can only pick up the crumbs.

Zealandia is built around two old resevoirs. It's a beautiful view past the small building in the middle of the lower resevoir. Hard to believe this place is surrounded by Wellington.

Hope is starting to show some improvement in her willingness to come back to us when we call her. Stella and I had Hope running back and forth between us at Pulgas Ridge OSP, all for just a nice treat on either end. Hope seemed to find it fun even after 5 or 6 trips! Up hill!

Stairs in the Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve. There's a paved road around the hilltop in Pulgas Ridge OSP and stairs leading up the top, but nothing really up there. On an earlier visit we heard that there used to be a big house up here, but nothing remains but the old stairs.

EDIT: The Hassler Health Home, a tuberculosis sanitarium owned by the City of San Francisco, used to be at the top of these stairs.

First time using my mountain bike for mountain biking in several years. It is absolutely beautiful up here. Heading into El Corte De Madera open space preserve.

We rode the Fir Trail > Resolution (which was rocky, hard) > El Corte De Madera Creek Trail. Looking forward to another ride some time soon, lots of trails to explore.
