Arduino stochastic autogenerative carillon

farnea posted a photo:

This Arduino based project is a stochastic melody generator I'm realizing for my newborn daughter.

SPECIFICATIONS

The carillon has two voices (bass and melody) randomly generated from a pentatonic scale.

The sequence counts four 4/4 beats.

The bass moves on 1/4 notes and consist of 2 measures repeated twice.

The melody plays 1/8 notes and pauses, for the all 4 measures length. Melody plays at least one octave over the bass.

On the first measure the bass plays alone, melody plays from the second measure based on a random choice.

Every four measures, the software chooses if generate a new sequence for bass, melody or both of them.

Pressing a button invokes an interrupt that reset the generator with a new tempo and scale.

The pentatonic scales are 24, 12 major and 12 minor.

The bpm can assume a value from: 60, 90, 120, 180.

When starting software, the random generator is set with a seed taken from analog input 0. In not connected, the seed would be a random noise values, otherwise you can set seed value using a knob.

A software switch, set when building, adds a further variation level, allowing a momentary semitone alteration of a melody note (the same grade of the previous or following scale will be played).

Randomness is not uniform, but you can tune it giving a weight for some events. So the scale and bpm choice is uniform, but the probability that the melody plays on second measure is 75%, that the semitone alteration occurs (when enabled) is 10%, that a new sequence for bass or melody is generated is 50%. You can set this weight when building.

The generation of sound is made using two PWM outputs connected to a piezo speaker. The software is using the Tone library.

A digital output can drive a LED, blinking it on tempo frequency.

Three outputs drive an RGB LED, changing color on tempo and note frequency values.

EXPERIMENTAL VARIATIONS

- MIDI output instead of internal sound generation.

- Digital output driving solenoids or servos.

- Analog/digital input for tempo and scale selection or change randomness behavior.

- Rules for automatic tempo and scale change.

- Microtonal approach.

DIY modular synth made putting together a lot of things I've built in the last times. There is a Weird Sound Generator, a Crackle Box, a random pattern generator, some filters (cutoff, square to sine), a gate controller, a Vactrol based controller, optical sensors and body contacts, mixing and power stuff.

I made circuit bending on my own stuff

I've posted a couple of video ... just a demo not a real live performance. Hope to post something more complete soon
