Arthur's Pass, South Island, New Zealand.

We were driving up to Arthur's Pass in heavy fog. Once we reached the first plateau, the fog disappeared and gave way to two beautiful rainbows. Unfortunately I wasn't fast enough to capture the second rainbow just on the outside of this one (you can still just barely see it to the right). We pulled over and just watched the beautiful landscape in front of us.

Valley View, Yosemite NP, California in the late afternoon.

The next day we got up at 5 and drove into the park to catch the sunrise. We found a great little pond that was half frozen and offered some great reflections of the surrounding cliffs.
The instructors let us borrow some of their filters and polarizers. I have never used them before and it's a lot of fun playing around with them. I especially liked using the polarizer. It brings out so much in the pictures. The ND grads were also great, I had a bit of a harder time to get used to them. I don't want to give up on them yet tho and do some comparisons between ND grads and bracketed shots.

During the day we went from viewpoint to viewpoint and really got to explore the valley. The landscape is overwhelming.

A fellow student, Lisa, snapped this great shot. I wish I had a good picture when the clouds were like this, but I was adjusting my tripod....
Ice cold

Simon Christen - iseemooi posted a photo:

This is a good example to show how cold it was in the mornings...

We got up early to rent snowshoes for some back country hiking. There were only 10 pairs available in total, so we had to get there early enough to grab some...

On the way to the trailhead, we saw a tree out in a snowfield glowing bright white. We slowed down and eventually parked the car. It was a tree covered in ice crystals. It looked absolutely beautiful. I had to get close to take pictures, but on the first step trying to reach it, my foot sunk deep into the snow.

That's where the snowshoes came inn... I have never tried it before, so I was awkwardly strapping those things on to my feet and started wading into the snow. I still sunk in a little bit, but it was much more comfortable.

The tree was amazing. It was radiating light from the early morning sun. I took a couple of pictures from different angles. This one I liked the best, because you can see the snow field sparkling in the background. I really like how the background is out of focus and it almost looks like snowflakes are falling.

All the crystals were gone when we drove past the tree again later in the day. I think they only lasted for a brief moment before the sun melted them away.

After the timelapse I took this panorama shot.

I found out about an awesome Photoshop plug in called Zoomify. You can basically see the image in high resolution by zooming in and panning around on it.

Check it out here: www.simonchristen.com/zoomify/TI_01.html

Turret Arch through the North Window in Arches National Park, Utah at Sunrise.

The plan was do drive from Arches National Park to Bryce Canyon National Park. So we had a long day ahead of us. I decided to try and catch one more sunrise while in Arches NP. I scouted out this spot the day before after seeing similar photos online. I knew the light would be excellent for sunrise.

I got up around 5:30ish and drove into the park while Jess decided to get some more sleep. About 40 min later I arrived at the parking lot for the arch. I got my gear ready, put on another sweater and started the heating pads for the gloves (it was freezing cold outside) before hiking out into the dark to find the spot I decided on the day before. It was extremely icy and I had to be careful not to slip and land on the camera or lenses.

You approach the North Window from the other side than seen in this picture. So I climbed through the Arch and then up a little cliff on the other side in order to center Turret Arch in the Window. I found a more or less stable position to set up my tripod. Twilight started and I fired off a couple test shots to see if the panorama idea I had for this one would work. Since I am using a wide angle lens, I knew I would have to overlap each image quite a bit for the end result not to look too distorted.

The sun started to come up and the wall in front of me started to glow red. I really like how Turret Arch is already fully in the sun while only the upper half of the wall is lit. It is a series of eleven shots stitched together to create this panorama.

I took a couple more shots and then started driving back to find sleepy Jessica just getting up. :-) We packed our things together and started the drive to Bryce Canyon (I will post pictures soon)
