The statue of Quan Âm rises from the desert near Adelanto, a 24-foot-high marble tribute to a Buddhist goddess and a symbol of the dogged determination of the Venerable Thich Dang Phap to promote his message of happiness and serenity.
In a doublewide trailer in the shadow of the statue, the Buddhist monk meditates, prays and plans the fulfillment of the rest of his dream: A monastery, temple and meditation center that would draw Buddhists and others from across the nation to this rural San Bernardino County outpost.
"I want to help everybody live in happiness," Phap, 65, said with a broad smile. "I want to help make everybody do good."
A wooden sign hopefully proclaims the Chan Nguyen Buddhist Meditation Center. But it is still a work in progress.

About six or seven year ago a lightning strike hit an old Live Oak tree next to Sierra Highway, a few miles from the ranch. The scorched hollow on the tree has increasingly become an elaborate shrine over the years since the silhouette resembles the Virgin Mary, Guadalupe, patron saint of Mexico in her iconic posture. Not visible in the image are the hundreds of hand written messages on the limbs and trunk of the tree from Mexicans, imploring "Lupe" for help or laments for missing their families, relatives and villages in Mexico.
