Mom: Oh, that's an adorable picture. And your Froot Loops. Look at those eyes.

Me: I look rather put upon, actually.

Mom: Yeah, you were probably like "Enough with the pictures every minute!"

Me: Tell me about the high chair.

Mom: Am I a bad mother that I made you sit in a high chair with flowers?

Me: Mom, I always loved flowers! I never had a problem with that!

Mom: Well, I bought the highchair to suit the décor more than to suit a little boy.

Me: I remember the highchair — I remember getting my hand caught in the crevasse between the seat and the back. But I don't remember being strapped in.

Mom: You were chained in!

Me: That makes it worse!

Mom: Why, I couldn't let you fall out! It was a cement floor!

Me: Well, modern highchairs have a tray to prevent me from...

Mom: Well, you had a tray, but now you were a big boy, and at this age, we took away the tray, and you used the chair more as a booster seat to sit at the table. Don't forget, years ago, there wasn't all the safety apparatuses you have now, and kids didn't seem to fall out of their highchairs the way they do now. Maybe they were sturdier, because they were metal instead of plastic.

Me: So at that age I could eat Froot Loops?

Mom: Yeah, well, you were already a year old.

Mom: [laughs] You were the cutest baby, look at that face! You were always had a big smile, what an adorable picture! Now notice in those days people evidently didn't use pillows on the bed. You stored the pillows in the closet, and put a bolster on the bed. I just thought I'd mention that.

Mom: This is an even cuter picture.

Me: You know, I remember the bedspread.

Mom: Really?

Me: Just barely.

Mom: I always liked flowers.

Me: In fact, I sorta vaguely remember you taking a picture of me on the bed, but with a Polaroid camera, so it would've been later. I remember seeing it develop and being fascinated by it. But I don't see any pictures that would correspond to this.

Mom: It must've been at a later date. Now notice that I put two twin headboards here.

Me: I remember that. I remember going under the bed and being able to feel the rope that connected the beds together.

Mom: Yeah.

Me: What do you remember from this Christmas, my first?

Mom: That it was very very hectic because you were a little baby. And this was the Christmas that I wrote that column about, the one where Bobby was being bad when I was decorating the tree, and I told him that Santa Claus was looking in the window, and would know if he was being bad or not. So Bobby was three, and he was all "yeah, right." Then he looked out the front window and there WAS a jolly fat Santa Claus outside in the street. I didn't I find out until years later that it was Eddie, our next-door neighbor -- he was practicing to be Santa Claus at the children's ward of the hospital.

Mom: The drums were probably for Tommy.

Me: There are drums for all of us.

Mom: Bobby's presents were on the left, yours were in the middle, and Tommy's were on the other side.

Me: I remember the dressing doll.

Mom: Yeah, I used to like those things. You actually remember that?

Me: Yeah. I once tried to "wash" it by soaking it in a sink...but then it wasn't drying so Bobby and I stuck it in a dark place, maybe a drawer somewhere. Ad that's the last I remember of it. I also think I remember the crib toy behind it, but I may just be thinking of a younger kid's toy.

Mom: You did? Probably you never got it because it was such a disaster. All the little boys were running around trying to hit it and they ended up hitting each other.

Me: Why an octopus?

Mom: Well, it was probably the only one they had. Or maybe the only one they had for boys. Or maybe the cutest one. In those days there weren't the party stores there are now. You got these from a local Hallmark store. Or a 5 & 10.
