This is Kaylee Dedrick, one of the peaceful protesters who was pepper-sprayed while standing on a public sidewalk on Sept. 24th, 2011, not breaking any laws. The officer who pepper-sprayed her - illegally and unprovoked - Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna, was in turn given a slap on the wrist.

Had the opposite occurred - had Kaylee pepper-sprayed Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna - she would likely have been sentenced to the mandatory minimum jail sentence of 7 years for assaulting a police officer.

A Time Line of the NYPD Press Office Denials from that Day:

- First, the NYPD denied that the pepper-spray incident even occurred... and then video of the event appeared.

- Second, the NYPD claimed that the (first) videotape of the event that appeared was "heavily edited" and didn't actually reflect what happened. Shortly thereafter another corroborating video, which depicted the exact same unedited events appeared.

- Next, the NYPD claimed that the "full context" of the event had not been shown, that footage before and/or after that showed the protestors "breaking the law" and "inciting a riot" and had been edited out. To no one's surprise, this too was a fabrication of the NYPD's Press Office.

In the end the truth came out, as it always does. Kaylee, along with Kelly Schomburg, Elizabeth Mahony and Jeanne Mansfield were pepper-sprayed at point blank range, after being illegally detained by the NYPD via kettling nets, for standing on a public sidewalk in broad daylight.

None of the above is conjecture - I was there shooting that day and witnessed the heavy-handed techniques and unnecessary brutality of numerous NYPD Police Supervisors.

Truth be told, I don't agree with all of the actions of the #OWS Protestors but it's not too difficult to understand why many of them hold the convictions they do and are willing to put themselves in harm's way.
