The master bedroom of writer Jay McInerney and Anne Hearst's Greenwich Village penthouse, designed by Robert Couturier. The Italian parchment-sheathed bed from the 1930s is matched with '30s easy chairs upholstered in orange leather; the drawings above the bureau are by, from top, Will Cotton and Everett Shinn. The fireplace is marble Louis XVI.

In this North Carolina mountain house designed by Ruard Veltman, walls are painted Pebble by Pratt & Lambert and the beds are custom-made by Veltman's firm. The bedcover and curtain fabric is Jefferson Linen in Flint by Legacy Home. Louis Ghost chair from Kartell.

Painted kitchen cabinets: 'Hardwick White' by Farrow & Ball

In the kitchen of a North Carolina mountain house, walls and cabinetry are painted Hardwick White by Farrow & Ball. The cabinetry, dining table and bench were custom-made by Ruard Veltman, the architect. Stools from R & Y Augousti. The sink is Shaws Original Fireclay Apron by Rohl.

In the master bedroom of a North Carolina mountain house, walls are painted Lunar Landing by Dunn-Edwards Paints. The wall panels and bench fabric is Ghent linen in Smoke by Pindler & Pindler. The headboard fabric, bedcover fabric and bolster pillow fabric are all Velvet in Celadon by Knoll Textiles. The carpet is Ebb and Flow in Mink by Stark. Bedside tables from R & Y Augousti.

Neutral living room + luxe fabric: Farrow & Ball 'Hardwick White'

In the living room of this North Carolina mountain house, walls are painted Hardwick White by Farrow & Ball. The ceiling is painted a custom color, but it's similar to Deep Bronze by Benjamin Moore.

In the foreground, the Kirin sofa is from Oly and upholstered in two fabrics: Mohair Extreme in Lichen by Maharam on the seat and Byron velvet in Sage (now discontinued) by Pindler & Pindler on the sides. The Elliot caned armchair is by Oly and covered in Mont Blanc Mohair in Tea (now discontinued) by Innovations. The three-leg chair is from Circa Interiors & Antiques. The coffee table and side tables are from R & Y Augousti. The Oly tufted bench is upholstered in the company's Standard Leather in Dove.

In the background, the tufted sofa is custom and upholstered in Belgique in Quail by Innovations. The multisided cube stool is limited edition by Kelly Wearstler; the cocktail tables at the bay window are by Oly. The hourglass-stools are upholstered in two fabrics: Byron in Sage on the seat and Laredo in Café on the sides, both by Pindler & Pindler. The drapes are Velluto in Rosemary by Pindler & Pindler.

In this Hamptons living room designed by Steven Gambrel, the sofa is covered in a gray linen by Scalamandré, and the love seat and ottoman are upholstered in an emerald-green linen by Pierre Frey. The rug is by Beauvais Carpets. The mixed-media work is by Joonsung Bae; chandeliers from Holly Hunt are suspended from the black-painted ceiling. Gambrel designed the club chairs, cocktail table and ottoman, and the limestone mantel was custom made by Jamb.

White and Off-White Paint Colors: Designer Favorites for Trim

To choose a trim paint color, consider the undertones in your wall color. Pale taupey-white walls (Monterey White) might not look great with pale gray trim (China White).

Also consider whether you're going for high or subtle contrast. If it's the latter and white trim doesn't appeal to you, try painting the trim the same color as the walls, in a semi- or high-gloss formula.

You can also mix your own trim color: ask the folks at the paint store to mix a quart of your wall color to 25% or 50% strength.

Steven Gambrel, you can decorate my bedroom any time! He designed the trim Glover bed and 1940s-style club chair; custom linens from Schweitzer Linen. Bedside tables are Paul McCobb mahogany side tables from Elan; the Stiffel lamps are from Laurin Copen. The 1930s French Art Deco side table by the window is from Karl Kemp; on it are vintage scientific cage lights. The photo over the bed is by Marine Hugonnier. Manderly Square carpet from Beauvais.

Here's what Gambrel says about the master bedroom (which is in a Long Island home):

"The owners wanted it to be a little more luxurious, so it has wall-to-wall carpeting. We have clean, contemporary furniture and some tailored custom pieces, such as the bed, which is very fitted. That seascape over the bed has a quiet spirit, and it helps keep things soft and airy. After all, you're upstairs, and it's less about earth, more about sky."

Cheerful glamour: Blue + green guest bedroom by Jamie Drake

In the guest bedroom of a New York apartment, interior designer Jamie Drake used a color he calls Prussian blue -- it's a handwoven yarn-dyed raffia from Holly Hunt. The Avery Boardman twin bed is upholstered in two Bergamo prints: Hyde Park for the seat and Rosegarten for the cushions. The flame stitch throw pillows are in Schumacher's Zenyatta Mondatta. The George Smith Norris Chair is upholstered in Palmarola by Pierre Frey; the walnut-and-brass end tables are from Buck House.

Drake's advice about ceilings? Paint them. "Color makes a ceiling seem higher. It lifts your eye and takes the lid off the box. I tend to like ceilings on the light side — light, subtle, and flat. The living room's is painted taffy, a kind of golden beige. The master bedroom's is the pink of a lady's slipper orchid." The only time not to paint a ceiling, he says, is when "there's beautiful plasterwork. Color would only detract."

I loved Moises Esquenazi's L.A. bungalow, and was all a' flutter when I saw his Long Island house (must be tough, right?) featured in Met Home.

Esquenazi and his partner Bryan Graybill painted the kitchen's lower cabinets Blazer by Farrow & Ball. The prep sink has a view of the outside, past a jaunty staircase that seems to float without visible means of support.

Faucet by Blanco, blancoamerica.com; tile by Walker Zanger, walkerzanger.com; Bosch dishwasher.
