In this New York bedroom, walls are painted Surf Blue and the bed is French Quarter Gold, both by Benjamin Moore. The duvet cover and pillowcases are Dwell Studio's Draper Stripe, one of my favorites.

Steven Gambrel, you can decorate my bedroom any time! He designed the trim Glover bed and 1940s-style club chair; custom linens from Schweitzer Linen. Bedside tables are Paul McCobb mahogany side tables from Elan; the Stiffel lamps are from Laurin Copen. The 1930s French Art Deco side table by the window is from Karl Kemp; on it are vintage scientific cage lights. The photo over the bed is by Marine Hugonnier. Manderly Square carpet from Beauvais.

Here's what Gambrel says about the master bedroom (which is in a Long Island home):

"The owners wanted it to be a little more luxurious, so it has wall-to-wall carpeting. We have clean, contemporary furniture and some tailored custom pieces, such as the bed, which is very fitted. That seascape over the bed has a quiet spirit, and it helps keep things soft and airy. After all, you're upstairs, and it's less about earth, more about sky."

In what interior designer Richard Mishaan calls a “Jean Harlow bedroom,” a tufted Mercer bench by Jan Showers rests at the foot of the bed, which is covered in a velvet spread. The side table is by Lorin Marsh; carpet is by Tai Ping.

I'd either wake up crazy or full of joy. But really, if you sleep in a closet, why not go a little nuts?

Interior design by Emery & Cie, a French textiles, furnishings, and paint company. Iron bed frame is Oreiller d’Herbes design; embroidered linen sheets in Kasbouri, large velvet pillows in Spring Green, and bedcover in printed linen with Arbre Premier pattern; Kasbouri lamp on stand with ceramic beads; velvet lampshade printed with Méchants Oiseaux pattern; nightstand is ceramic pouf with handles in Timid Green.

Walls: lower skirting in cement tiles with Fern design; above that is Orpheus wallpaper; top portion of walls painted Blue Green; lacquered panel behind bed in Early Yellow.

For this guest room in a Nantucket home, designer John Willey took a 1960s color combination — aqua and orange — and updated it. Walls are painted Benjamin Moore's Lido Green. The hall, in the background, is painted Fresh Cut Grass, also by Benjamin Moore. The Straw Woven throw and Maharaja Golden bolster are by John Robshaw. The bed pillows are Lysette Reverse Orange on tan linen by China Seas. Yarnz throw. Alhambra Tangerine rug, Vanderhurd Studio.

I’m not one for beds floating haphazardly in the middle of the room (I need the anchoring reassurance of a wall, please), but I love the color palette Vincente Wolf used in this Palm Beach condo. He designed the bed’s powder-coated steel frame, coating it in white enamel “to look like a line drawing” against the pearly blue walls, painted Benjamin Moore’s Patriotic White. Bed curtains are VW Home's Linen Sheer in lime green. Shades are Bergamo's Dunes in ice blue. Anichini bed linens. Tina floor lamps from LightForms.

In his Los Angeles bungalow, interior designer Moises Esquenazi used big color in a small space: he painted his guest room Benjamin Moore's Newburg Green, a lush deep teal that plays off the hot, tropical-hued fabrics of the throw pillows. A silver-leafed wooden deer head gives the room a "sprinkling of out-there embellishment."

David Jimenez, a vice president at Hallmark and an interior designer, painted the small guest bedroom of his Kansas City home a deep blue, Benjamin Moore's Starry Night Blue. The sleigh bed is from Ralph Lauren and the desk lamp, used here as a bedside lamp, is from Restoration Hardware.

For its final issue (sob), Domino rolled up its sleeves to help out a community still feeling the effects of Hurricane Katrina. The result is a home that's sustainable in every sense of the word—made of healthy materials, affordable to maintain and cozy to live in.

No chemicals in this sleep haven: organic cotton sheets, pure wool blanket (yes, it does get chilly in NOLA sometimes) and natural latex mattress. Even the wall covering is biodegradable, printed with water-based inks on a PVC-free backing.

'China Blue' by Benjamin Moore + how to upholster your headboard: Venice Beach bedroom

Walls are Benjamin Moore's China Blue. Vanessa De Vargas covered a basic headboard in Alexander Henry's 'Hollywood' fabric. Throw pillows are made with Lulu DK fabric. Lamps are vintage; to find similar ones, search 'Blanc de Chine' on eBay. IKEA curtains and bedding. Photo from morewaystowastetime.blogspot.com.

Tips for covering a headboard: Buy a plain headboard or a piece of cheap wood, plywood or MDF from a hardware store, a piece of thick foam you can cut with scissors, and fabric. If you want a tufted headboard, buy some over-sized buttons, too (ideally, you'd cover the buttons with the fabric for a monochromatic look). Stretch the fabric over the foam and attach it to the back of the board with a staple gun. To tuft it, drill holes in the wood to pull the buttons through.

If that sounds like too much work, simply hang a large painting at the head of your bed, or curtains behind your bed -- whether there's a window or not -- in a striking fabric.
