Long Mynd Gliding Club

One of our 'neighbouring' clubs. Being situated right on the top of a hill, Long Mynd is a great place to go ridge soaring. They are also one of the few clubs that can still launch gliders using a huge bungee and a lot of manpower.

This was our first turning point on our 500km glide.

We are back off to the gliding club today for the weekend but the weather doesn't look so great. Shame, because now I have my medical re-instated I can actually fly myself.

At the end of last month Paul and I attended a weeks soaring course at our gliding club in the Midlands. At the time I didn't have my medical re-instated so I couldn't fly solo. Our friend Dave Findon owns a two seat glider so he invited me along on a 500k flight over Wales. I was just ballast of course but we had a great flight.

Phaenicia sericata (Lucilia sericata). The maggots of these flies are used in maggot therapy as they only eat dead tissue. The flies tend to lay their eggs on dead animals and forensic scientists use this to date the time of death of a murder victim as the hatching rate and growth rate of the maggots is directly linked to the ambient temperature where they are.

I've been a bit absent lately as I have been tied up with lots of family stuff. Loads of family snaps but these don't make good flickr viewing. I'm now assisting with entertaining one of my Australian cousins for 2 months. Her passion is family history research and yesterday she had me scouring churchyards in search of one of our long lost ancestors. Sadly we drew a blank but we did get to see some lovely old churches.

I've been going through my cookery program choosing meals that don't have photographs associated with them. It's quite satisfying, adding my own photo to a recipe. But not quite as satisfying as eating it ;-)

This is my niece, Abigail who is nearly 6. After failing to pose her in a conventional way I just let her do her own thing and was quite surprised by the result. I think she's been reading too many fashion mags :-)
