A pair of Black 5's, 44871 and 45407, power up the gradient through Bodmin Parkway Station in Cornwall today. The steam locomotives, with a classic diesel at the rear, are pulling sixteen classic coaches on an eight day long tour of England, Scotland and Wales. Today was the second day of the leg from central London to Newquay and then on up to Cardiff. Apparently a ticket cost in excess of £2000, including overnight hotel accommodation. This train had earlier gone up the Newquay branch line, this was great fun to watch as the train slowly negotiated the very narrow track.

This is a reply from me and posted to the image below this.

'Thanks for the welcome and valuable input Joe, Pete and Lakemans. I have an excuse (haven't I always!) The Corfe Castle image, especially the foreground, was chosen from many I took, to be a background on a diorama in the corner of a new model railway I'm building.. The railway is upland England themed and the Corfe image is to be cropped into a panorama, adjusted to match colours, printed on matt paper and glued to the background of the scene. See the above image of my railway to see where this image is to go.'

For those folk that may be interested in the build. The hills are formed with newspaper scrunched up into balls, then taped to the baseboard in rough piles and then covered in wet plaster of paris cloth (broken arm bandage!) When this is dry it's painted in earth brown paint as a base colour then coloured flock granules are sprinkled into wet PVA glue over the cloth. Lumps of green foam are glued on to look like bushes and small pebbles and sand glued on to mimic rocks. The ballast under the track is real tiny grit particles glued to the baseboard with a very thin, watery PVA glue mix applid with a syringe.. The trees are xmas cake decorations.
I now need some 4mm scale tiny rabbits, but unfortunately such a thing doesn't seem to exist....even ebay has failed!

A new set of Pirelli Scorpion Winter tyres definitely needed testing out in the recent snow and Ice.. So a snowy road trip from Cornwall to the North of Scotland was called for...outward up the left side.... A30/M5/M6/M74/A9 and return on the right side.... A9/A1/M1/M42/M5/A30. There was no snow in Cornwall and strangely no snow beyond Inverness...but tons of it inbetween. A selection of bird pics and and of course some snowy ones too will be posted soon.
This image is of the Cromarty Firth looking towards Invergordon. Dolphins, Red Kite, Long Tailed Duck, Eider Duck, Great Northern Diver and Black Throated Diver were all seen from this spot.
Oh! and the winter tyres?....total perfection... even when everyone else was stuck the combination of Land Rover power and winter tyres were completely unstoppable.
Bohemian Waxwing

The Bohemian Waxwing is a Starling sized bird that nests in the remote taiga forests of Russia and Scandinavia.
When the berry crop fails in their normal wintering grounds the Waxwings go on the move....and this is one of those years.A lucky one for us in the UK as this winter most of the Scandinavian population of Waxwings are over here. Thousands of these amazing birds are presently spread around the UK.... and one is probably in a berry bush near you now!
The bird gets its name from the red waxy tips of its wing feathers, which you can see in the above photo.
Not an ideally sharp image as the conditions were a bit grey and I had to shoot high ISO's and at f6.3 with the 600mm to get any decent shutter speeds, so consequently very little depth of field....but at least the head is sharp.
Below is a link to a website that that lists the counties and towns where you can currently see Waxwings.

An early morning image of Derwent Water in Cumbria. The nice light didn't last long as just shortly after taking this image it started to rain....and it didn't stop for two days!
For those of you that live near me in West Cornwall a trip to Marazion just before sunset will be worthwhile, as this Autumn the Marazion Marsh starling roost is totally amazing. I haven't seen this amount of birds roosting at the marsh for many, many years. There may be over 100,000 birds staying in the reedbeds overnight.
