Large beds of golden reeds surround this old windmill, which has been converted to a residential property in recent years. It is nestled amongst sand dunes that provide a natural barrier to the sea, which lies immediately beyond this point. The base of the windmill is thus sheltered from the excesses of gales blowing in from the sea, but its blades would have stood high enough to catch their full force and provide energy to drive mechanisms within the structure.

New Years Eve

This shot was taken on the residents' access road behind my terraced house in Otley on the last evening of 2009. It is part of several curved rows of houses adjacent to the River Wharfe which were originally built around the year 1850 as homes for the workers of Pegholme Textile Mill; owned by the wealthy Duncan family who were responsible for the employ of many workers and the growth of the town.

So as this particular terrace bore witness to its 160th new year's eve, I celebrated my 22nd. There was change in the air and the temperature was dropping - Yorkshire would be dusted with snow once again, about an hour after this photo was taken. I was lured outside by the full moon, which was really lighting up the sky behind those glowing clouds. And the shot was completed with the appearance of a 'ghost dog' - a canine neighbour of mine who conveniently stood still for a few seconds during the camera's long-exposure and then wandered off into the night.

47 floors and 554 ft in height, the Beetham Tower is the tallest building in the UK outside of London and the tallest residential development in Europe.

During the installation of the glass and steel 'blade' architectural feature on the roof, a strange noise problem emerged. People reported that the building "whistles" (more like an intermittent hum) in windy weather. The sound is close to standard musical C; some say it is like a "UFO landing" in sci-fi films. The noise also affected the production of local soap opera, Coronation Street, with producers having to create extra background noise as the tower is close to the show's set. Despite apparently rectifying the problem, the humming sound can still be heard on occasion in the area, depending on wind direction.

There's a lot of fine masonry work in this structure. The sandstone rock has been hewn into all sorts of simple but elegant shapes and borders around the window frames and doorways. The building's grand old central fireplace on the ground floor still survives - on a cold day like this one it's easy to imagine the figures huddled round it all those centuries ago, warming their limbs against the enduring Yorkshire chill.
