Milestones are constructed to provide reference points along the road. This can be used to reassure travellers that the proper path is being followed, and to indicate either distance travelled or the remaining distance to a destination.

In Europe, the distance measured typically starts at specified point within a city or town, as many roads were named for the towns at either end. For example in London, United Kingdom, a plaque near the Eleanor cross at Charing Cross is the reference point from which distances from London to other towns and cities are measured. In the UK, milestones are especially associated with former Turnpike roads.

A new visitor in my garden, sorry the quality is quite poor.

Although they are the most colourful members of the crow family, jays are actually quite difficult to see. They are shy woodland birds, rarely moving far from cover. The screaming call usually lets you know a jay is about and it is usually given when a bird is on the move, so watch for a bird flying between the trees with its distinctive flash of white on the rump. Jays are famous for their acorn feeding habits and in the autumn you may see them burying acorns for retrieving later in the winter.

The all-black carrion crow is one of the cleverest, most adaptable of our birds. It is often quite fearless, although it can be wary of man. They are fairly solitary, usually found alone or in pairs. The closely related hooded crow has recently been split as a separate species. Carrion crows will come to gardens for food and although often cautious initially, they soon learn when it is safe, and will return repeatedly to take advantage of whatever is on offer.

Church of St. George, Arreton, Isle of Wight.

The Arreton church of St. George was first begun in the Norman era. It is mentioned in Domesday, so must have been built before 1086.
The monks of Quarr helped to extend the Church of St. George around 1160. A tower was added in 1299
The church has an historic organ dating from 1888 by the famous builder William Hill.

The settlement has had different names and different spellings over the years. For example, the village was called Adrintone in the 11th century, Arreton in the 12th century, Artone in the 13th century, Atherton and Adherton in the 14th century, Adderton in the 16th century, and Aireton in the 17th century.

Godshill village is a very pretty and popular old village with a large amount of thatched houses.
The name 'Godshill' is said to originate from the foundations of the local church, which dates back to the 14th century, being moved from the bottom of the hill to its present location on the top of the hill on three occasions whilst it was being built. This was taken to be a sign from God that the church should be built on the hill, hence the name Godshill

St Agnes Church in Freshwater Bay on the Isle of Wight is unique in being the only thatched roof church on the Isle. The church dates from 1908 and was designed by the architect Isaac Jones. Visitors who venture inside St Agnes’ are sometimes confused by a stone bearing the date 1622 and believe the church is 17th Century. The stone actually came from some derelict farmhouse buildings used in the construction of the church at the turn of the 20th Century.

Halloween tower

The ghost of a young woman has been seen. She is said to be dressed in white has been seen wandering round Hiorne's Tower, particularly on moonlit nights. It is believed that she committed suicide by throwing herself off the tower due to the loss of her lover.

Bembridge Windmill.

Knowle Mill, better known today as Bembridge Windmill.
The last remaining windmill on the Island can be found just outside Bembridge. The windmill, which dates from 1700 has undergone extensive restoration and is managed by the National Trust. The windmill contains a complete set of wooden machinery and gearing, much of which is original.
It is a Grade 1 listed building and one of the island's most iconic images.

The area of Old Portsmouth is also known as Spice Island which is where all the spices used to enter the city from Jamaica.
Sir Walter Raleigh unloaded Britain's first potatoes and tobacco on Spice Island in the late 1500s.
