I wanted a couple of shots of myself for my soon to be launched website and as I always prefer to be behind the camera I thought this might be the best way of getting a shot of me without out really getting a shot of me if that makes sense?

Anyway I really enjoyed mucking about with different angles and poses and I quite enjoyed the running backwards and forwards between the camera and my position, I'm sure if there was anyone watching they'd of thought I was on day release from the nut house or something, but as I said it I thought it was great fun so I think I'll be doing a few more of these in the future.
This is a slightly different take on yesterdays upload of the student accommodation at the University Of Essex in Southend, I hope this colour version helps explain why this building is so divisive in the town, architectually its probably not that spectacular but even when desaturated as much as this its still pretty colourful!

This building mainly houses the students accommodation for the University Of Essex in Southend On Sea, I say mainly because it is divided into a few uses including an underground car park, some shops and the student accommodation.

Thats not why I gave this shot this particular title though, I chose it because this building divides opinions in the town, some think its ugly and out of character with its surroundings and others think that it brightens up a street that is otherwise pretty plain. In fact whilst standing waiting for this shot to expose I was approached by two winos who wanted to know what I was up to, the first one couldn't understand why I wanted to photograph such a monstrosity whilst the other one argued it was a great looking building, thankfully they forgot about me at this point and continued on down the street still discussing the merits of the architecture!

Personally I don't mind it, ok the colours are a tad bright (obviously not in this shot but i'll post a colour one in time i'm sure) but its infinitely better than the square almost windowless concrete box it replaced.

These pipes were apparently erected years ago to transport gas and or oil from ships docked in the Thames Estuary to a new refinery on Canvey Island in Essex the idea being it was quicker, cheaper and easier than dredging a channel in the estuary that would allow such big vessels closer to the shore, however once these pipelines were finished it was decided the new refinery was no longer required so millions was wasted anyway!

Yesterday I met up with Scott Baldock Photography, who as well as being a fantastic photographer (if you haven't checked out his photo stream yet I strongly suggest you do) is a thoroughly nice bloke, for a trip to Canvey Island. I've been following Scotts work on Flickr for a while and I discovered he lives just up the road from me. It also turned out we'd both been eyeing up Canvey as a potential venue but hadn't been brave enough to venture over there so we headed over late yesterday afternoon and spent a very enjoyable six hours chatting nonsense about everything from football to photography. Oh yeah and shooting some fantastic piers like this!

This is my third attempt in recent weeks to get a shot of some beach huts with clouds rushing over the top and although this is the best one yet i'm still not entirely happy with it.

I just cant seem to catch the sky at its best, the first time I tried to get the shot there wasn't enough cloud, the second time there was plenty of great looking cloud but it just wasn't moving and this time I think it was the wrong type of cloud (sorry for sounding like British Rail there!), although there was enough of it about it was just a bit too wispy so the movement has left a strange pattern on the sky and not the smooth contrasty streaks I was looking for.

I'm not too disappointed though as it appears that spring has finally sprung which means I'll hopefully get lots of opportunities in the coming weeks to try again!!

This granite obelisk at Chalkwell is known as the Crowstone, It stands in the mud opposite the end of Chalkwell Avenue, It was erected in 1837 and is used to mark where the River Thames ends and where the Thames Estuary begins as well as the limit of jurisdiction of the Port of London Authority. It replaced a smaller stone, dating from 1755 which was moved to Priory Park in Southend where it remains today. It's thought that there has been a marker on this site since 1285.

Twitter | Instagram

I revisited a spot that I shot almost exactly 6 months ago at the weekend, I really like this place as there's plenty of interesting 2nd world war relics to shoot but it's a tight little beach that pretty much gets cut off at high tide so it doesn't give much variety in the way of angles to shoot things from. Once I'd worked that out and realised I wasn't going to get anything new (it did take me a while) I decided to shoot this pier from a similar spot that I had previously and then compare them when I got home.

Now this time I was shooting with a new camera, a much better quality filter (all be it an IR one and not a 10 stop ND) and six months more experience under my belt so obviously I was hoping that this shot would be better than the last as I'd like to think I've learnt a few things in that time and I wanted to make sure I can justify the money I've spent on my new camera and all the other not inconsiderable frippery I've bought too in that time.

Well having studyed the two shots I'd happily say that this is a better shot, it's certainly sharper, clearer, smoother, lighter and darker where I wanted it to be which I'm putting down mostly to the new camera but also my control of it and what I've learned in the time between the two shots but the one big difference I think will be obvious is how my processing has improved!!

OK this was shot in black & white and the other colour but what was I thinking?!?! the last one looks terrible and i'm sure it probably took me a while to get it to this state but this shot didn't take too long to process at all, I played with the contrast a little, I smoothed the sea out a touch and took some brightness off the beach but very little in comparison.

So the conclusion I've come too and i'd be happy to hear your thoughts on this but i've decided that as the time I spend shooting increases and the time I spend processing images decreases my craft must of improved? Well thats the theory i'm going with anyway and it made me feel good this morning true or not!!
