Post-riot heavy policing continued today, and we're seeing all sorts of other UK police on the streets of London. In Lewisham at the moment, the friendly Heddlu (pronounced, roughly, hetheley) are patrolling Lewisham, on loan from Wales.

I think Southeastern have only added a shiny new shelter (top right) to platform 4 at Lewisham station to try to distract us from the fact that this month they're hoping to get government permission to seal off permanently this convenient exit to Silk Mills Path, already reduced to opening for just three hours a day, on working days only.

Even the shelter's not all shiny: it was only built yesterday and had already been accompanied by an inaugural splatter of (surprisingly red) vomit a short distance away when I arrived at 8.40am today

To put the riots behind us, and celebrate their recent reopening under new management, Lewisham pub the Ravensbourne Arms today held a 'Community Celebration Day'. I got a half-price burger from that barbecue via a Twitter competition :D

Screen age riot

Rioting broke out in a number of parts of London this evening. After a quick supermarket trip we stayed indoors, watching TV and Twitter coverage. Lewisham didn't suffer as much as, say, Woolwich, but got more TV coverage, with these aerial shots taken over the town in the early evening.

Today the ex-editor of the News of the World, Andy Coulson, was arrested and questioned all day at our local police station in Lewisham. Sadly I arrived home shortly after he left, when the paparazzi had gone and there were just two TV reporters, including this one, still outside.

This view of the former Citibank HQ tower block in Lewisham town centre caught my eye this evening as it seems to summarise the June weather, with its mix of rain stains, brightly lit parts, blue sky and clouds of all shades. Make your mind up, weather!

Today we voted Yes to fairer votes: 'Yes' in the referendum asking whether we should change the voting system through which we elect our MPs to the Alternative Vote, ranking preferences in order. Tomorrow, they will count the votes, and we will have lost.

Today the Mayor of Lewisham agreed to shut five libraries (although most will hopefully stay open in some form) as government cuts to local authority funds begin to hit. This sign was on Lewisham's main Central Library's shutters when we walked past there tonight, perhaps due to the recent New Cross occupation?

Night lights

When we first moved in to this building nine months ago, this side was in permanent darkness at night as it was not quite finished. Since then we've seen more and more windows light up; I think it's almost fully occupied now, which is good to see.

It was a year ago today that we first saw, and immediately loved, the Silkworks development we now live in. Today I've been to the communal roof terrace (currently locked!) to see how the neighbouring Silvermill development is progressing. Lots of progress since I last photo-a-day-ed this in September!

We arrived home from the supermarket tonight just in time to catch the last couple of carols at a gathering held right outside our block of flats by the developers, with the Salvation Army brass band in attendance. Edith enjoyed free mince pie and mulled wine!

The snow has kept coming for a second day, giving rise to such beautiful views as this one across towards St. John's. If you squint at the right-hand side of the picture, you can just make out the rarest of sights: an operational Southeastern train!

For reasons I won't bore you with, I spent a while queuing in the Lewisham branch of Lloyds TSB. It took me a while to notice just how weird their representation of Lewisham is: Thames Barrier; DLR station; clock tower; daffodils and rolling fields...

Walking home this evening, I stopped to peep through at part of the development next to us, Silvermill. Our building's manager (who traced the cat-owner!) started talking to me, and Edith arrived home too and joined us.

Then the manager took us up to show us the view from the communal roof terrace on the eighth floor of our building, which overlooks the development, from where I took the ten photos that were stitched into this big one. They're making fast progress on the building work!

To complete the ’Bourne trilogy*, after a trip to our neighbouring supermarket this evening I snapped this photo of the river Ravensbourne, after which the college Edith showcased yesterday was (I assume) named. It's not exactly a flood risk at the moment.

(* I actually hadn't even made the connection between this river and yesterday's photo – let alone Eastbourne – until we were uploading several photos in one go a few days later, lest you think I only took this pic to make a dodgy connection :) )

Big Brother ended tonight. We watched out of some faded loyalty: we used to be viewers until the excellent Celebrity Hijack in '08 made us realise how bad the normal series had become, so we gave up 2½ series ago, until the past few weeks' Ultimate version came along to round things off. As this poster off Lewisham Way says, RIP. (And here's hoping Five don't revive it!)
