natural egg dyes

we'moon in the woods posted a photo:

i was inspired by These Days in French Life and decided to make some natural dyes for eggs.... i was super frugal with the eggs, only boiling 4 bc we didn't have many in the fridge. then, serendipitously, a friend stopped by w/ a dozen fresh eggs from her chickens, and obie came back from town with another dozen. :) guess i have leeway to experiment more if i desire.

method: i poured boiling water over each of the dyestuffs, let them cool, then added a pre-boiled egg. at this point they have been in the dyes for about 6 hours, the winners are turmeric (bright golden yellow) and cabbage (a beautiful blue tinged with purple). the blue and cran-berries are imparting some color, but it's not super strong. i'm going to leave the eggs in overnite and will post the results tomorrow.

woohoo pastel party! leaving the eggs in the dyes overnight definitely darkened them up (in retrospect i would have taken the blue out sooner, and maybe even the purple). but we've definitely got a pink egg here, which was looking to be the hardest to come by.

well i can't remember if the saying applies to winter or spring, but this year spring came ROARING in like a lion (and will hopefully scamper out like a lamb). we had huge gusts of wind all day, up to 40-50mph, cold as the proverbial witch's tit (whatever that means).... sigh
