Many thanks yet again to dusashenka www.flickr.com/photos/oldcinemaphotos/2178189288/ for the quite literal Classic...Originally opened in 1910 as Cinema De Paris....it was reconstructed in the Twenties,and went thru various name changes in the years to come.....It was named Classic Leicester Square in 1979...Its last name was The Cannon Royal in 1985...It sadly closed down 3 years later and was demolished in 1989....Hunt`s Court is on the extreme left ...And at least The Bear & Staff still stands...............

Where will it end??...Oh here...Heres the last One of my St Pauls Cathedral old n news....Southwark Bridge 1921 and on the South Bank The Globe Theatre 1997.....St Nicholas Cole Abbey Church `Wren again` in the foreground it was badly damaged during the Blitz in 1941 sadly it remained a shell until restoration in 1962...Also seen St Mary Somerset `Wren again`the body of the church was demolished in 1869!!and has just been a Tower since....

Continuing from my previous shot....And now a little further back we are in 1953.....Centre and now incredibly dwarved St Mary-le-Bow Church otherwise known as Bow Bells where according to tradition a true Cockney must be born within earshot of the sound of the bells....This current Church was rebuilt by Christopher Wren `1673`...The Church was then destroyed during the Blitz in 1941 and was still partly a shell in 1953....Restoration finally began in 1956.....On the extreme right is Watling Street, it is considered to be one of the oldest streets in London,It was the principal middle street or Praetorian Way of Roman London.....Centre of the now photo is One New Change, 560,000 square feet of office and retail,you can see people on the roof terrace...

Continuing from my previous shot...More incredible shot from the top of St Pauls and now looking North...The centrepiece is Christ Church Greyfriars another Christopher Wren beauty and it was severely damaged during the Blitz in 1940....The steeple still standing after the wartime damage, was disassembled in 1960 and put back together using modern construction methods. The surviving east wall was demolished in 1962 seen in the top photo.....The Tower is now used as a private residence.....The former HQ for the Post Office stands behind it was completed in 1911, it closed in 1996 and is now the Merrill Lynch HQ.....The roof of Smithfield market can also be seen in both photos..........

Continuing from my previous shot.....And The Central Criminal Court aka The Old Bailey `1907`dominates both photos,the bottom one has the 1972 extention added....Just to the right is St. Sepulchre-without-Newgate`which is the largest church in the City of London.. The tower and outer walls were built around 1450. Badly damaged in the Great Fire of 1666, the church was rebuilt by Wren's masons in 1670-71....And the historic tower holds the twelve bells of the Old Bailey made famous by the nursery rhyme 'Oranges and Lemons....So much to see in this photo including St James`s Church Clerkenwell on the extreme right also look out for St Pancras and Hampstead and Highgate...........

Many thanks to Sou`Wester www.flickr.com/photos/cliveabrown/4241405330/ for the fab retro photo............Founders Arms Pub still stands on the bottom left,as do the nice flats....Sampson House a Brutalist building from 1979 and was once a precessing centre for Lloyds Bank,and next door Ludgate House has popped up `1989`and was the Daily Express Building...Both buildings could be soon under major develpoment including demolition...Behind that 240 Blackfriars Road continues to rise architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris...St Georges Wharf is the other tall tower at the rear........Extreme right the former Kings Reach Tower `1978`now renamed South Bank Tower and yes..........under refurbishment and it will be slightly taller..........Blackfriars Rail Station now has an exit/entrance on the South Bank and work continues on the bridge including 4,400 solar panels, in the old photo you can see the Old Blackfriars Bridge that was removed in 1982............Wanna see more??

Massive thanks yet again to iEagle2 www.flickr.com/photos/matsorn/8145022865/ for the excellent top photo......Taken on Theobalds Road...To the extreme left are Gray`s Inn Buildings 1888...Next left Roseberry Avenue and the Germolene oitment ghost sign is not as old as you may imagine it was not here in the Forties but more of that later..........Cavendish Mansions 1882...And it took me ages to get a 19 bus in the same position the 19s stopped going to Clapham Junction in 1987,and the routemasters stopped in 2005.....And where did those trees come from???

Ahh again many thanks to affendaddy www.flickr.com/photos/khiltscher/4003855157/ i have now done over 20 `now`shots of his fab retro collection...........This Street was Charles Street until 1939..`.Her Majesty's Theatre` seen here and there has been a Theatre on that site for over 300 years...Ipi Tombi opened at the Theatre in November 1975 this all black show was a great success and would later transfer to the Cambridge Theatre in March 1977........Tommy Cooper died here in 1984......And no he was not eating Westlers Hot Dog!!............

Classic top photo from 1950 and we are in Haymarket an area Once rife with prostitution...The building with the clock was Once HQ for Burberrys..The Theatre Royal Haymarket is on the right and has been there since 1821 nearly 200 years old!...It is meant to be haunted by John Baldwin Buckstone, who was actor-manager of the Theatre Royal Haymarket in the mid 19th century and a friend of Charles Dickens.......Patrick Stewart is one of the actors over the years claiming to have seen him....The canopy of Her Majesty's Theatre can be seen to the left and a theatre has been on that site for over 300 years...
