The Grossglockner High Alpine Road is a panoramic road in Austria. The most famous route through the Alps ends just before the jewel in the Hohe Tauern national park's crown: the highest mountain and the largest glacier in Austria, the Großglockner 3,798 m and its glacier, the Pasterze. You will have a driving and nature experience of a special kind on 48 kilometres of high alpine road with 36 bends, and an altitude ascent to 2,504 metres! You pass through a unique world of mountains with blossoming alpine meadows, fragrant mountain forests, massive cliffs and eternal ice to the foot of the Grossglockner, the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe. The cheeky Alpine Choughs that circle around are just a few feet away. The clough has a buoyant acrobatic flight with widely spread flight feathers. The Alpine Chough pairs for life and displays fidelity to its breeding site, which is usually crevice in a cliff face. It feeds, usually in flocks, on short grazed grassland, taking mainly invertebrate prey in summer and fruit in winter; it will readily approach tourist sites to find supplementary food.

You can enjoy a truly breathtaking view of the Großglockner and the other mountains. Here you can enjoy snow up high in the mountains. It is an impressive natural experience for many people: size and power can be felt here, one is subject to the fascination of the eternal ice and the elemental force of nature. The flight of three Alpine Chough is swift and acrobatic with loose deep wing beats. Their high manoeuvrability is accomplished by fanning the tail, folding its wings, and soaring in the updraughts at cliff faces. They circle around just a few feet away. It's pleasure to watch these buoyant acrobatic flyers high up in the mountains.

Op de berg kun je de Alpenkauw zien die op grote hoogten hun kunsten uithalen: eerst maken ze duizelingwekkende duikvluchten, dan zweven ze weer hele stukken om vervolgens loodrecht naar beneden te storten en vlak voor de rotsbodem terug op te trekken in een steile beklimming. Ze gebruiken de wervelende luchtstromen rond bergtoppen en wanden om in groepsverband deze fascinerende stuntvluchten uit te voeren. Onderweg op de Großglockner Alpenstraße kun je eventueel stoppen bij verschillende uitzichtplaatsen en informatiepunten. Voor kinderen zijn er speeltuintjes en ook is het mogelijk om in echte sneeuw te spelen. Er zijn tevens 2 kabelbanen die je de mogelijkheid bieden om nog meer van de mooie omgeving te bekijken.

It lies below the Glockner house, the detour of the Grossglockner road to Franz Joseph's height, at the Glacier road and is about 2 km below the end of the Pasterze. The basin collects the meltwater of the glacier Pasterze. Eventually the water will pass through the main Alpine ridge to the Möll river eventually into the Danube - Donau river.

In terms of total area, the Raurisertal is one of the largest expanses of valley in the Hohe Tauern range. In contrast to many others, it is not used merely as a grazing area during the summer, having been an important site of settlement for many centuries. Since 1984, large areas in both of its side valleys, the Hüttwinkeltal and Seidlwinkeltal, have belonged to the Hohe Tauern National Park. Together with the National Park Region which surrounds the Rauris Valley, we encounter special features and natural treasures that are so rich in variety, we are often said to be a separate “world” within the Hohe Tauern National Park. The national park Hohe Tauern is with 1,800 km2 the biggest protective area of Austria and the whole east alps. It applies about wide primeval landscapes with glaciers and cliff faces, alpine pastures and cultured alpine pastures. The variety of 266 3 thousand mountain picks, 1000 mountain lakes, 342 glaciers with a total area of 185 km2 as well as the rich fauna and flora fill with enthusiasm since centuries. Over 295 km of marked hiking paths give you the perfect opportunity to get to know the beautiful Rauris Valley. The ultimate nature adventure. Offering beautiful scenery and outstanding hiking are the romantic Seidlwinkel Valley, with the 500-year-old Rauriser Tauernhaus, the Krumltal and Bräualm where you'll also walk alongside the roosts of the recently reintroduced Bearded Vultures. And let's not forget the Gasibach and Forsterbach valleys, as well as the Hüttwinkltal and the uniquely beautiful Kolm-Saigurn valley head. A beautiful view at the Naturfreundehaus lodge from the foot of a 3,000-meter mountain in the valley head of Kolm-Saigurn out towards the Hoher Sonnblick, the Rauris Valley opens a doorway to a delightful spring fairytale. The Naturfreundehaus, is a starting point for ski and hiking tours in the high mountains. The lodge featuring a Mining Museum and National Park and includes a small chapel.

Since 1984, large areas in both of its side valleys, the Hüttwinkeltal and Seidlwinkeltal, have belonged to the Hohe Tauern National Park. Together with the National Park Region which surrounds the Rauris Valley, we encounter special features and natural treasures that are so rich in variety, we are often said to be a separate “world” within the Hohe Tauern National Park. The national park Hohe Tauern is with 1,800 km2 the biggest protective area of Austria and the whole east alps. It applies about wide primeval landscapes with glaciers and cliff faces, alpine pastures and cultured alpine pastures. The variety of 266 3 thousand mountain picks, 1000 mountain lakes, 342 glaciers with a total area of 185 km2 as well as the rich fauna and flora fill with enthusiasm since centuries. Het Raurisertal is qua grond oppervlak, één van de grootste grond gebieden van de Hohe Tauern. In tegenstelling tot vele anderen wordt het niet alleen tijdens de zomer maanden als Alm gebied benut, maar wordt het sedert honderden jaren gebruikt als woonplaats. Sinds 1984 behoren grote oppervlakten van de zijdalen, Hüttwinkeltal en Seidlewinkelstal tot Nationalpark Hohe Tauern. Samen met de aangrenzende regio, biedt het Raurisertal zo veel en veelzijdige bijzonderheden, dat van een eigen “wereld”in het Nationalpark Hohe Tauern wordt gesproken. Kanitha geniet van de zeer mooie omgeving in en om het dal-einde Kolm-Saigurn. Het Nationalpark Hohe Tauern biedt vandaag nog veel diersoorten een thuis. Diersoorten die bijna zijn uitgestorven. Zo moest men jaren gelden ook in het Raurisertal besluiten voor massa toerisme of “zachte” toerisme ter bescherming van de natuur. Daarom voelt men zich vandaag in het Raurisertal als in het paradijs op aarde. Heerlijke alm weitjes, de indrukwekkende Baardgieren, rondlopende Marmotten in het hart van het Nationalpark zijn een teken dat de natuur nog in takt is. En idylle dat tot dromen uitnodigt. Meer dan 295 km gemarkeerde wandelwegen, geven u de gelegenheid het mooie Raurisertal te leren kennen. Zeer de moeite en het wandelen waard is het romantische Seidlwinkeltal met het 500 jaar oude Rauriser Tauernhaus, het Krümltal met de Bräualm en de overnachtingswand van de opnieuw uitgezette Baardgieren, het Gaisbachtal en Fosterbachtal, of het Hüttwinkltal met de unieke dalafsluiting; Kolm-Saigurn, en vele andere belevenissen tijdens mooie wandelingen naar gastvrije Almhütten. De Ammererhof is een zeer goed uitgangspunt voor wandelingen en tochten. Een idylle dat tot dromen uitnodigt. Het doet goed wanneer we in het dagelijks leven en werk eens tijd maken voor de natuur, mystiek en familie. Niets anders dan onthaasten, gezondheid, bewegen in de bergen en ontspanning in de prachtige natuur zijn de elementen die nodig zijn voor een balans tussen lijf, geest en ziel. De geest en gedachten tot rust laten komen en regenereren bij de buitengewone “Kraftplatzen” van het Raurisertal.

The Krumltal is one of the side valleys of the Rauristal and can be reached by a steep path in the beginning. A beautiful scenery with a lot of wildlife. It's listed as a 2.5 hours walk and 1.5 hour back. Between water falls, rocks and alpine pastures the Kruml brook brings you directly to the Birds of Prey of the alps. The Krumltal accommodates the most important traditional sleeping places and the best observation possibilities for griffon vultures which come annually during the Hohe Tauern. At the same time it is the only area in the national park where all three kings can be observed regularly. It is one of the most closest settled valley by the golden eagle. In summer times there are between 60- 80 griffon vultures, which spend their summer vacation in the valley of vultures. The kings of the air in the wild nature are very far, but in the valley of Rauris, however, very close. We didn't really expect to get a sighting of the bearded vultures but were rewarded with more than a few sightings. Also glipses of marmots. The walk is leading to the Bräualm Mountain Hut. In summertime the Hut does simple food and deserved beer! If you want to go further ... you can. In 1986, the Rauris valley was selected as the site in which to reintroduce the bearded vulture to the Alps this year will see the final release of bearded vultures into the wild, along with smaller animals which have lived in the Hohe Tauern for centuries. Look out for imposing Bearded Vultures or once the snow melts, free-roaming marmots. The Raurisertal is also one of the few Tauern valleys to be a site of continuous settlement.

Te bereiken via een tamelijk steil begin over een brede verder makkelijke weg, naar een romantisch dal, met veel wild zoals marmotten, gemsen en baardgieren. Een avonturen wandeling van ongeveer 2.5 uur bergop tot de berghut Bräu-Alm en in 1.5 uur terug. In de zomer kun je een hapje en een welverdiende biertje hier nuttigen. Het genieten van de stilte en het ervaren van het indrukwekkende schouwspel van de natuur doet u bij voorkeur in een rustig tempo. We namen de hele dag voor deze wandeling, Let op de rotswanden en het hogere luchtruim waar de baardgieren zich laten aanschouwen. Het is nog een hele klim naar de top en die bereikt je niet zonder inspanning. Maar wie dit magische moment eenmaal beleefd heeft, zal daar geen spijt van krijgen! De baardgier is een bijna uitgestorven giersoort die men weer opnieuw in het wild is uitgezet. De Baardgier ziet u in het wild meestal alleen op zeer grote afstand, maar in het Krumltal hadden we mazzel om deze Thermiekvliegers van dichtbij te zien. Aan het einde van het dal bevindt zich een mooie waterval.
