At the Hintertux Glacier Austria's only all-year-round ski resort you hit the heights: Ski runs as far as you can see and fantastic panoramic views from the dolomites to the Zugspitze, Worldcup-Halfpipe, Funpark and beautiful sunterraces. Hintertuxer Gletscher is de touristische naam voor een tweetal gletsjers, de Gefrorene-Wand-Kees en de Riepenkees, gelegen bij het plaatsje Hintertux in het Tuxertal, een zijdal van het bekende Zillertal in het district Schwaz. De gletsjers vormen het einde van het Tuxertal. Het ijs van de Gletsjer is op bepaalde plekken maximaal 120 meter dik en de gletsjer heeft een lengte van circa 4 kilometer. Elk jaar schuift de gletsjer rond de 40 meter naar beneden. De hoogste berg van de Tuxer Kamm is de Olperer, met een hoogte van 3.476 meter. Het hoogste punt waar men naartoe kan reizen per kabelbaan is 3.250 meter hoog. Tegenwoordig gaat de kabelbaan door het leven met de slogan Spectaculairste kabelbaan van de Alpen. Vandaag de dag geldt de gondel als één van de innovatiefste en spectaculairste skiliften en stijgt van 2600 m naar 3250 meter in zo'n 5 minuten. Bovenop de gletsjer genieten we van de frisse berglucht en de schoonheid van de Alpen. Er is er in de zomer rond de 18 kilometer piste geopend. We voelen ons vitaal en vol energie. Its height means that there are usually good snow conditions, enabling almost all pistes and lifts to be kept open. The Gefrorene-Wand-Spitzen are two summits on the Tuxer Kamm, a mountain chain in the Zillertal Alps accessible from Hintertux on cable cars. Cave explorers meeting the Neanderthal~!

Only two years ago they found a massive ice cave just below the peak of the Hintertux glacier. An ice cave on 3.250m! The cave winds itself deep into the glacier and you will find yourself 25m underneath the surface in the middle of glowing ice crystals, bizarre formations, deep gorges, mini glacial lakes… it’s a natural phenomenon that you should check out when you visit Hintertux. A real adventure in summer and winter! Equipped with helmets we climb and crawl deep into this beautiful and ice cold cave. It’s a unique challenge for sporty people without claustrophobia.

The Natural Ice Palace at the peak of Hintertux glacier has been opened to the public since 3rd November 2008. In August 2007 Roman Erler of Natursport Tirol, whilst doing a mountain tour discovered the cave by chance and subsequently surveyed it. At this time it was never considered opening it to the public because of the natural movement of the glacier. Astoundingly there was little movement of the wall although the iceflow was at a 30° gradient.The temperature inside the Ice Palace hovers around zero degrees Celcius. The sense of being inside a glacier is quite indescribable: a heady combination of dynamism and serenity. Quite simply one of the most beautiful places that we have ever had the privilege of visiting. Family photo of us; BieJee, Kanitha, Ben, Samantha and the Neanderthal!!

We were lucky enough to be the only people on the last tour of the day, and because we were so enthusiastic, the project leader allowed us to enter a section of the cave not usually accessible to the public. Sections of the cave have been illuminated with coloured lights which add a different dimension to the experience, and the guide is well experienced at pointing out the most interresting locations. On a practical note, the cave is accessed from the top ski lift at Hintertux and is a 200m walk under supervision from the stunning Gefrorene Wand viewpoint which provides stunning vistas over the Tyrol and over the Dolomites.

The Natural Ice Palace at the peak of Hintertux glacier has been opened to the public since 3rd November 2008. In August 2007 Roman Erler of Natursport Tirol, whilst doing a mountain tour discovered the cave by chance and subsequently surveyed it. At this time it was never considered opening it to the public because of the natural movement of the glacier. Astoundingly there was little movement of the wall although the iceflow was at a 30° gradient.The temperature inside the Ice Palace hovers around zero degrees Celcius. The sense of being inside a glacier is quite indescribable: a heady combination of dynamism and serenity. Construction began in 1999 and ended in March 2000. The building was not an easy call due to the reach Gefrorene wall in one stop They chose the mountain from the east rather than the west. Today the cable car is known as the most spectacular cable-way in the Alps. The gondola is one of the most innovative and spectacular lifts. It takes you from 2,600m to 3,250m in about 5 minutes.

Hintertux is one of the most popular summer skiing regions in Austria it lies furthest up the valley at the foot of the Hintertux Glacier, and is surrounded by mountains and glaciers. At the Tuxer Ferner glacier is an all-season skiing area with a large number of lifts. The place is the base for many walks and high Alpine tours. The Hintertux Glacier Ski Region belongs to the Zillertal 3000 meter ski region and is a popular with skiers in summer as well as winter. The Tuxer valley was first mentioned in the records in 1280. The Tuxer valley was discovered in prehistoric times as evinced by various finds from the middle Stone Age. Shepherds and miners also settled the valley, migrating over the Tuxer Joch from the Schmirn valley and cultivating it by clearing forests. The meadows and alpine pastures in the Tux valley continue to be cultivated even today, albeit most farms only provide a secondary source of income.

Tux is accessible from Mayrhofen by road. From Mayrhofen station on the Ziller Valley Railway there is a bus service. Within the Tux valley there is a free bus service. Yes there is some lovely views and walks from the first stage of the Hintertux cable car. It is above the tree line in the mountains and is used for summer pasture. Seasonal migration to high pastures is still practised in Austria. Cattle are taken care of by local farmer families who move to higher places. Austria has over 12 000 sites where 70 000 farmers take care of about 500 000 cattle.

Het speciale aan deze berg is dat er hier een aantal opgravingen zijn gedaan. Deze opgravingen gaan terug tot de bronstijd. Dit toont aan dat het Zillertal al heel lang als bergpas werd gebruikt. De boeren zorgen in de zomer nog steeds voor verplaatsing van vee naar hoger gelegen weiden en lager gelegen dalen in de winter. De boeren wonen in principe permanent in dalen, in vaste huizen. Alleen de kudden en hun directe verzorgers verplaatsen zich. Oostenrijk heeft meer dan 12 000 boerderijen waar 70 000 landbouwers zorg dragen voor ongeveer 500 000 runderen.

Milka is a brand of milk chocolate manufactured by Kraft Foods. It is sold in bar form, in holiday shapes, and in a variety of specialty forms. It was created in 1901 in Austria, by Swiss chocolatier Philippe Suchard as his first milk chocolate variety. Suchard was an independent company for many years. Kraft acquired the majority of Jacobs Suchard, including Milka, in 1990. The brand has a well-known symbol, the Milka Cow, which is a lilac colored Montbéliard cow (original colour brown-white, completely white face) also Purple cow sporting a bell around her neck, usually shown in an Alpine meadow. The name is believed to be derived from combining Milch und Kakao (the German terms for milk and cocoa. Anyway it’s more than 35 years and 110 TV adverts since that first one and it seems the lilac cows are now more popular than ever.

On our stroll around the Hintertux Glacier above the tree line we came across the famous Milka cows. Original a lilac colored Montbéliard cow. Het skigebied op de Hintertuxer Gletscher gaat 365 dagen per jaar door, omdat er het gehele jaar kan worden geskiëd op de Hintertuxer Gletscher. De Tuxer Joch kan per kabelbaan worden bereikt. Het speciale aan deze berg is dat er hier een aantal opgravingen zijn gedaan. Deze opgravingen gaan terug tot de bronstijd. Dit toont aan dat het Zillertal al heel lang als bergpas werd gebruikt. De boeren zorgen in de zomer nog steeds voor verplaatsing van vee naar hoger gelegen weiden en lager gelegen dalen in de winter. De boeren wonen in principe permanent in dalen, in vaste huizen. Alleen de kudden en hun directe verzorgers verplaatsen zich. Oostenrijk heeft meer dan 12 000 boerderijen waar 70 000 landbouwers zorg dragen voor ongeveer 500 000 runderen.

Hintertux is one of the most popular summer skiing regions in Austria it lies furthest up the valley at the foot of the Hintertux Glacier, and is surrounded by mountains and glaciers. At the Tuxer Ferner glacier is an all-season skiing area with a large number of lifts. The place is the base for many walks and high Alpine tours.
