Pygmy Falcon

crawdog posted a photo:

Photo by me. Lighting by Nikographer. This photo was taken this past summer. I bumped into Jon and we experimented with some shots in the Bird House using extreme off-camera flash. In this case the remote flash is positioned off to the the way lower-right; I cloned out the reflection of the flash in the falcon's eye.

The direction of the light really accentuates the texture of the feathers on the head.

Most of the enclosures in the Bird House have a protective plastic mesh that keeps the birds in the enclosure; some have glass. The problem with the plastic mesh is that it lights up when exposed to flash. By using an off-camera flash, one can avoid this problem. The flash also had a diy bounce card attached to it. Next time, I'll use a soft-box.

While I took this photo, I believe that Jon's lighting makes this shot. Thanks! Conversely, Jon's shots probably suck because I was in charge of the lighting!:-)
